Caleb Williams is all set to embark on his NFL career and is waiting to be picked up by a team in the 2024 drafts. Looking at his stunning college football career that won him the 2022 Heisman Trophy, Williams is set to be a first-round pick and it is the Chicago Bears who has the first pick this year. Leading up to the much-anticipated drafts later in April, all signs point to Williams joining the Bears.
However, former NFL player and analyst Robert Griffin III does not want the rising quarterback prospect to go to Chicago. One might wonder why Griffin is against the trade and in a recent video, the former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year clarified his stance on the matter. The 34-year-old used the former Bears quarterback Justin Fields as an example. In 2021, the Bears drafted Fields as the 11th pick of the first round.

Unfortunately, the move did not work out for either party as the franchise has traded Fields to the Steelers ahead of this year’s drafts. In the three years since their journey began in 2021, Justin has raked up 6,674 passing yards with 958 attempts and 578 completed passes. He also registered only 40 touchdowns during his 3-year stay in the franchise. Hence, it was time for the franchise to move on from Fields.
Robert Griffin III explains why Caleb Williams should not join Chicago Bears
The stats from Justin Fields are by no means atrocious. However, for a first-round pick, his numbers were not up to the mark. But, if Robert Griffin III is to be believed, most of the blame lies with the franchise itself. Seeing what happened to Justin, RG3 is not confident that the Bears can provide Caleb the stage to set the league on fire. Hence, the former NFL star wants the 22-year-old to pull an Eli Manning.
What does he mean by that? RG3 brought up the 2004 drafts when Eli Manning had no interest in playing for the San Diego Chargers. Before the ceremony, Manning made it clear that he was not ready to go to San Deigo and requested the Charges not to pick him up. However, Charges did pick Manning and later traded him to the New York Giants. As per Griffin, Caleb Williams should do the same as well!
He added, “Caleb Williams should pull a Eli Manning and demand that the Chicago Bears do not draft him no.1 overall. After everything that’s happened with just Justin Fields, can Caleb Williams really look at that and say, ‘You know what, this is the organization that has my best interest at heart and they’re gonna help develop me into the player I want to become?'”

Robert Griffin III also added that Williams should opt for Washington Commanders as he is from there. He also added that Bears head coach Matt Eberflus is under a tremendous amount of pressure after securing the first pick and trading Justin Fields. As per RG3, this could be a “lame duck” season for coach Eberflus. Hence, joining a franchise like the Bears, which is currently unsettled, may not be the best call for Caleb.
RG3’s words also have a lot of stock behind them as he is also a former first-round pick and a Heisman winner himself. Unfortunately, he could not live upto his potential and ultimately retired from the league after 8 seasons in 2021. So, the USC graduate perhaps should consider the former NFL star’s words before choosing to play for the Bears. However, Williams has already hinted that his move to Chicago is as good as done ahead of the drafts which are scheduled to be held on April 25, 2024.
