The new NFL season is on the horizon after the culmination of Super Bowl 2023. Kansas City Chiefs are the champions thanks to an outstanding season from their quarterback Patrick Mahomes. It just proves how important the position is on the football field. Hence, a good QB is always in demand and New Your Giants’ Daniel Jones may soon be available on the market.
Daniel Jones is reaching the end of his rookie contract with the New York franchise. Jones was a first-round pick in 2019. Since then, he has played four seasons for the Giants. The franchise had the opportunity to extend the contract for a fifth year, but they decided not to after some lackluster performances from the youngster. However, that decision may backfire on them very soon.

The 25-year-old had the season of his life in 2022. In the recently concluded season, Daniel Jones covered 3,205 yards, landed 15 touchdown passes, and had 5 interceptions. In total, he has 11,603 yards and 60 touchdowns in his NFL career. Recently, the Giants’ general manager Joe Schoen revealed that he wants to win the Super Bowl with a team built around Daniel Jones.
Daniel Jones faces backlash for asking $45 million for a contract extension
The decision to not renew will cost New York Giants a significant amount of money. ESPN is reporting that Jones has made a big change in his representation team. Previously, Jones had “CAA” as his representative. But now, it looks like Daniel Jones is going to be an “Athletes First” client. With the big change, Daniel is also seeking a huge pay rise. if the rumors are to be believed, Jones is going to ask for $45 million for a contract extension.
So the question becomes, is Jones worth such a hefty price? According to sports broadcaster Craig Carton, Daniel is not at the level of a player who may warrant a $45 million price tag. Carton was pretty dismissive of the reports and opined that New York Giants may be better off without Jones.
Craig wants the Giants to use the non-exclusive tag and said, “There’s another one though. there’s another one that’s never used, and people don’t even know about it. It’s the other one though. That’s where we sign you. You go out into America and get a better deal. And if you get a better deal, you can have it because we get not one but two first-round picks back because you get a better deal.”

He continued, “Or I got an even better deal. Cartblanch, there’s the door. Feel free to walk outside that door and see what type of offers are waiting for you, knowing that you threw 15 touchdown passes this past year. Because we are the best place for you and we ain’t paying you $45 million per year.”
How much did Daniel Jones earn for his rookie contract with New York Giants?
For his rookie contract, Daniel Jones earned $25.664,056 throughout his 4 years as per Spotrac. In 2019, he earned $17,179,768. In 2020, Jones pocketed another $1,751.548. In 2021 and 2022, he got another $3,003,096 and $4,194,644 respectively. Although he was going to receive a massive $22 million for his fifth year. the Giants did not exercise the option.

The ESPN report further added that Daniel Jones was going to sign a lucrative contract that was valued at $35 every season. However, with the switch in the agency, his asking price has reportedly gone up by almost $10 million. While there are franchises like Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who lack a QB after Tom Brady’s retirement, it will be interesting to see if anybody matches the asking price or not.
If any franchise does pick Daniel Jones up, it will perhaps be the best solution for both parties. While Jones would get his payday, New York Giants are going to have two first-round picks in the upcoming NFL drafts. So it is a potential win-win situation for both.
