Continuing its trend of putting on some of the most entertaining events, ONE Championship delivered one of its biggest editions of ONE Fight Nights in 2024. As such, let’s take a look at everything that took place at ONE Fight Night 22: Sundell Vs. Diachkova on Friday, May 3.
Coming into this one, the spotlight was on 19-year-old Muay Thai sensation Smilla Sundell and surging Russian knockout artist Natalia Diachkova. Due to an uncharacteristic weight miss, Sundell was stripped of her ONE Women’s Strawweight Muay Thai World Title on Thursday. As such, only Diachkova was eligible to win the title in their heavily anticipated matchup.

In the co-main event of the evening top featherweight MMA talents Akbar Abdullaev and Halil Amir went toe to toe in an epic contest. Similarly, the featured bout of the evening saw the extremely talented Sinsamut Klinmee take on the Russian Dmitry Menshikov. Not only that but the card also brought us a plethora of other matchups across MMA, Muay Thai, kickboxing, and submission grappling.

Nanami Ichikawa vs. Bianca Basilio (Catchweight (132 LBS) Submission Grappling): In what was one of the more dominant performances of the night, Bianca Basilio submitted Nanami Ichikawa within 35 seconds by way of submission. Picking up her second promotional win, Basilio put her opponent to sleep with one of the tightest rear-naked chokes you’ve ever seen.

Thongpoon PK Saenchai vs Zakaria El Jamari (Strawweight Muay Thai): A true fighter’s fight, Thongpoon and El Jamari put it all on the line for their fight. A back and forth for the most part, the final round saw Zakaria El Jamari throw caution to the wind and rally on late for a bonus-worthy unanimous decision win.

Chihiro Sawada vs. Noelle “Lil’ Monkey” Grandjean (Atomweight MMA): Up next, we had the incredibly talented Chihiro Sawada take on Noelle Grandjean in a fight that mostly took place on the ground. On the night, Sawada was at her constricting best, holding down and limiting Grandjean for the majority of the bout. In the end, the Japanese native looked to cap off the win with some ground and pound, but the bell saved the blushes of her opponent.

Rungrawee Sitsongpeenong vs. Bogdan Shumarov (Lightweight Kickboxing): Up next, we had the thoroughly entertaining kickboxing bout between two solid competitors. Whilst Shumarov seemingly dominated most of the proceedings, Rungrawee also had some good moments scattered throughout. That said, many were left disappointed and called for a robbery after “Legatron” was awarded the split decision win over Shumarov.

Reece McLaren vs. Hu Yong (Flyweight MMA): For the most part, this fight had one of the most frantic starts of the night, with “Wolf Warrior” finding McLaren’s chin early in Round 1. Despite devastating connections to the chin on three separate occasions in the very first Round, “Lightning” hung on and began showcasing his wrestling and grappling prowess from Round 2. Although he nearly managed to submit his opponent after that, McLaren will be content with the split decision win regardless.

Hiroki Akimoto vs Wei Rui (Bantamweight Kickboxing): By all means, the fight meant everything to China’s Wei Rui as he looked to make his promotional debut against the Japanese veteran Hiroki Akimoto. That said, he couldn’t have asked for anything better as he coasted to a dominant unanimous decision over the 31-year-old, former Evolve MMA athlete. All things considered, many believe that ring rust after more than a year out of action had a role to play in Akimoto’s flat performance.

Maurice Abevi vs. Zhang Lipeng (Catchweight (174 LBS) MMA): Despite many wanting to see some striking action, the Swiss sensation was not left with much choice as the Chinese veteran Zhang Lipeng who had his mind set on having a grappling contest instead. That said, the 34-year-old managed to get a few takedowns on the young buck, but it was Abevi who found more success. Stuffing takedowns and submission attempts, the 24-year-old eventually got the nod for a deserved decision victory.

Sinsamut Klinmee vs Dmitry Menshikov (Lightweight Muay Thai): Starting off like a house on fire Sinsamut Klinmee did well to keep Dmitry Menshikov at bay. With glimpses of the damage he could cause with one-off hits, the Russian was eagerly waiting for his opportunity to unload. Eventually, that opportunity arrived in Round 3 when he managed to connect to the body of Klinmee, landing vicious knees, before finishing off with a punch to the body for good measure.

Akbar Abdullaev vs. Halil Amir (Featherweight MMA): For this one, there was a lot of hype behind Hali Amir, owing to his three-fight win streak. However, his reputation did not faze Abdullaev in the slightest who landed a wild left hook, seemingly out of nowhere calling a surprising stop to the co-main event of the evening. A big win for the 26-year-old Kyrgyzstan native, and many expect big things from him in the future.

Smilla Sundell vs. Natalia Diachkova (Strawweight Muay Thai World Championship): Being the only fighter capable of claiming the Strawweight Muay Thai World Championship on the night, Natalia Diachkova started the fight in the best way possible. Landing a knockdown and a lot of damaging shots, many felt that a new champion was about to be crowned. However, Smilla Sundell showed why she was the champion to begin with, rallying back in the second round swarming a covering Diachkova with a barrage of body shots to end the fight.
