The Sacramento Kings have been the biggest surprise of the 2022-2023 NBA season. As many fans might be aware, the franchise was in a playoff drought and had missed the NBA postseason since the 2005-2006 NBA season and has been considered a low-tier team for many years.
Despite many stars such as Demarcus Cousins, Rajan Rondo, and Ron Artest being a part of the roster in that timespan, they never really had a winning record and qualified for the playoffs. That is until this season as the Kings currently hold a record of 46 wins and 30 losses.
By doing so, they have secured a spot in the NBA playoffs after almost two decades. Now that the Kings are in the playoffs, fans might be interested in knowing the furthest the team has managed to go in it over the years.
Have the Sacramento Kings ever won an NBA title?
As we all know, the ultimate goal for any successful NBA franchise would be to win a coveted NBA championship. However, that is easier said than done as several teams across the league have never managed to win. After all, injuries and matchups play a huge role in a team’s chances of winning. The list of teams that have never won includes the Sacramento Kings who have never officially secured an NBA title.
At least not in the modern era of basketball. Some fans might know that the NBA has gone through several changes over the decades since its conception. Plenty of teams changed ownership, cities, and names. It would interest a few to know that the Kings were called the Rochester Royals back in 1951. That was also the year they managed to win a title by beating the New York Knicks in an intense 7 game series.
Be that as it may, that team is technically not the Sacramento Kings we know today. Although the modern-day Kings have never managed to win the NBA Finals. They did make the Western Conference Finals back in the 2001-2002 NBA season. They defeated the Utah Jazz and Dallas Mavericks in the first and second rounds of the playoffs. By doing so, they managed to face Kobe and Shaq’s Los Angeles Lakers, a team they had already faced and lost to in the past.
Well, no one can blame them for losing to the defending champions at the time as the Lakers were on the verge of making a three-peat. Something that has not been done again in this century. Sacramento managed to force them to 7 games. But ultimately ended up losing.
Although the Kings haven’t won a title in the modern era of basketball. This year shows promise considering their impressive record at the moment.
