Venus Williams, former World No. 1 tennis player and renowned athlete, has embarked on a meaningful endeavor alongside Adam Pendleton. Together, they are organizing an auction with the noble aim of raising funds for the restoration of American singer-songwriter Nina Simone’s childhood home in Tryon, North Carolina. In a recent interview with Paper magazine, Williams passionately shared her insights about the project, highlighting the significance of preserving the history of underrepresented communities and her deeply personal connection to Simone and her extraordinary legacy.

Williams expressed her profound admiration for Nina Simone, emphasizing that her own journey as a trailblazer in the world of tennis would not have been possible without Simone’s groundbreaking influence. The seven-time Major winner acknowledged Simone’s pivotal role in breaking barriers and opening doors for people of color. In the face of adversity, Simone exhibited unwavering courage by standing for the truth, even if it meant making sacrifices along the way.

“There would be no me without women like Nina,” Venus Williams said. “She broke so many barriers; she opened so many doors and sacrificed so much. There were so many other artists at that time who weren’t willing to make those sacrifices.”

The collaboration between Venus Williams and Adam Pendleton to restore Nina Simone’s childhood home holds great cultural and historical significance. By co-curating an auction, they aim to generate vital resources to ensure the preservation of the place where Simone’s remarkable journey began. This initiative goes beyond simply preserving a physical space; it is a testament to the power of art, activism, and collective efforts to honor and celebrate the legacy of an influential figure.

Why does Venus Williams want to restore Nina Simone’s home?

Nina Simone’s childhood home stands as a symbol of resilience and determination, representing a pivotal period in the life of a visionary artist. It is a tangible reminder of the challenges faced by Simone and countless others from marginalized communities, as well as their indomitable spirit in the pursuit of their dreams. Williams and Pendleton recognize the importance of preserving such historical landmarks to ensure that future generations can connect with the struggles, triumphs, and contributions of those who came before them.

“You could tell that the truth meant a lot to her,” she further said. “So much so that she was willing to sacrifice her position in the world and her success for what really mattered. I literally am doing what I do because of her and because of people like her.”
