Shakira and Gerard Pique announced their separation earlier this year. The relationship’s end has had a lot of media coverage with Jordi Martin being at the head of most of the news. A video from an interview has surfaced in which Shakira explains why she had not married Pique.
Shakira and Pique could settle their dispute in court regarding the custody of their children. The Colombian singer would reportedly want to avoid this since she is already in the midst of a tax fraud case in Spain.
Shakira on why she never married Gerard Pique
On being asked why she never married Pique during the 11 years of their marriage, Shakira said, “Piqué and I have never been a traditional couple. We don’t have a marriage contract or a written agreement, but we are parents and we share that a lot. We support each other and offer a lot to our family.”

In an interview, Shakira was asked, “For all intents and purposes, you two are married. But you’re not officially married.” To this Shakira replied, “To tell you the truth, marriage scares the s*** out of me. I don’t want him to see me as his “wife”. I’d rather him see me as his girlfriend.” I want to keep him on his toes”
Speaking to Glamour magazine in 2014, she said, “We already have what’s essential, you know? We have a union, a love for each other, and a baby. I think that those aspects of our relationship are already established, and marriage is not going to change them. But if I’m ever going to get married, he’s the one.”
Shakira’s legal disputes in the Spanish courts
Shakira could end up facing two battles in court this year. She is already facing a $15.5 million tax fraud case in Spain. She may also have to go to court in order to settle custody disputes regarding her children with Pique. The Colombian wants to take their children to Miami, USA, while Pique is completely opposed to the idea. He is uncomfortable with moving the children away from Spain.
Reacting to the tax fraud case, Shakira said, “Because I have to fight for what I believe in; because these are false accusations. I paid everything they said I owed, even before they filed a lawsuit.
“So I don’t owe them anything. And I have been advised by one of the four largest tax specialist firms in the world. I have the confidence that I have done things most correctly and transparently from day one.”
Shakira faces eight years in prison and a hefty fine if she is found guilty by the Spanish courts. No trial date has been set yet by the Barcelona-based court as of now. Its latest ruling was on 27th September, approving for the Spanish prosecutors to pursue the case.
