Harry Maguire, a name that often evokes strong opinions among Soccer pundits and fans alike. Some consider him a solid defender, while others criticize him to no limit. There are times when the hate for Maguire goes beyond ‘Soccer’, people go far beyond the limit and say unacceptable things.
The hate includes not only the Soccer side of Harry Maguire but sometimes it goes to his personal life, including death threats and whatnot. Recently, Maguire’s mother had to come out and give a statement against the unacceptable hate being directed towards her son.

“As a mum, seeing the level of negative and abusive comments in which is receiving from some fans, pundits and the media is disgraceful and totally unacceptable to any walk of life never mind someone who works his socks off for club and country”.… pic.twitter.com/N4Omejo6VZ

Harry Maguire’s journey to prominence began at Leicester City, where he showcased his potential as a central defender. In 2017, Leicester City acquired Maguire from Hull City. During his time at Leicester City, he displayed impressive defensive statistics averaging over 5 clearances per game and having an 86% passing accuracy.
Maguire’s consistent defensive display at Leicester earned him a call-up to the England National Team. He debuted Senior International in the final World Cup Qualifier against Lithuania in 2018. Then he joined Manchester United for a transfer fee of $98m which made him the most expensive defender at the time.

The expectations were sky-high. The fact that Manchester United bought him for such a big fee is also a big reason for constant hate. When the price tag is so high, it’s really hard to impress everyone, and making mistakes in matches does not help Maguire’s case.

After Maguire made his Senior International debut, he quickly impressed the England coach Gareth Southgate. Southgate took him to the World Cup in Russia where he was a major figure in England’s run to the Semi-final. With both ability on the ball and defensive ruggedness, he became a firm favorite with the fans.
The England defender then played a big role in England’s campaign in the UEFA Euros in 2020. He gave stellar performances throughout the competition and played a pivotal role in England’s journey to the final which they lost against Italy on penalties. He even scored a powerful penalty in the top corner in the shootout against Italy in the final.

Unfortunately, since then, the England International has struggled to play even at an average level in some instances. He was the United captain when they went through their worst phase. After the appointment of Erik ten Hag in 2022, Maguire did not start even half of the games that Manchester United played in the 2022-23 season. Then, he was removed as captain of Manchester United at the start of the 2023-24 season.
However bad the former Manchester United captain might play on the Soccer pitch, it is completely wrong to spread hatred against him on such a massive scale. It is not justified and fans on social media should abstain from doing it because it affects the player’s mental health which is bad for him on a personal level.
