Andre Onana joined Manchester United in the summer of 2023 from the Serie A giants, Inter Milan. Ever since his arrival, things haven’t been looking good for the Cameroonian goalkeeper. It is to be believed that his greed has cost him massive trouble ahead of AFCON’s opening game for Cameroon.
Andre Onana recently decided to stay back in Manchester to play across the recent Premier League and FA Cup matches. Due to this decision, he had less than 24 hours to travel to his national team before their opening game for AFCON 2024.

Due to bad weather around his private jet was blocked to proceed further. Onana is facing a race against time to successfully reach the destination before his team plays. Cameroon plays Guinea at 5:00 pm GMT in Yamoussoukro and Onana has been stranded 150 miles away in Abidjan.
With the weather not getting better, Onana has decided to now attempt to travel to the stadium by car. This decision to stay back is looking to cost Onana massively and many fans are correlating this situation to greed. One fan went on to say, “Should’ve left earlier. His fault. Zero sympathy.”
While a few fans said, “Onana is so greedy, if I’m the Coach he won’t play throughout the tournament.” Holding back was never a good decision as no matter what even if he reaches there on time, it won’t be sufficient for any coach to guide his team in such a short period.
Why didn’t Andre Onana leave for AFCON early?
Several players who were to represent their nations in the AFCON and Asian Cup left in the first week of January. Andre Onana decided to stay back and leave in the final moments of the start. While few would say he wanted to represent his club, many claimed that he feared losing his place at the club.
It was believed by several fans that Andre Onana refused to go early in fear of losing his place to Altay Bayindir the 2nd choice goalkeeper of Manchester United. With the pressure mounting on Onana, he cannot let Bayindir get a chance at playing. Because of the level of blunders Onana has caused this season so far.
The fact that ETH agreed to Onana staying back shows how little he trusts Bayindir. Lowkey think Onana is scared Bayindir will out perform him while he’s away and lose his spot to him.

On the other hand, it is known that if Cameroon bows out of the AFCON early in the group stages. Onana won’t be missing even a single game for his club Manchester United. Manchester United won’t be playing a single match till January 27, 2024.
Whether Onana stayed back for the love of Manchester United or in the fear of losing his place. This moment has not been good for him as he went on to concede 2 goals in his last match against Tottenham Hotspurs, and now is facing a race against time to reach his destination.
