Although Portugal was more than equipped to bring home their first World Cup title, they lost to minnows Morocco in the quarterfinals.
Cristiano Ronaldo had started last year in bad shape following the tragic death of his infant child. In addition to this, Ronaldo faced a tough time at Manchester United as he lost his place in the team. However, the former Manchester United star could have ended the year on a good note by winning the World Cup. Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan for him.
Despite having a decent start to the World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo could only muster a single goal in the group stages. He started the round of 16 clash against Switzerland on the bench and came on in the 73rd minute. The same happened in the quarterfinals against Morocco as Portuguese coach Fernando Santos opted to start Goncalo Ramos in Ronaldo’s place.
Only this time, Portugal’s World Cup dreams were shattered as they were shockingly defeated by the Moroccans. In what was probably his final appearance at a World Cup, Ronaldo exited the tournament with tears in his eyes. To pile up his misery, Ronaldo’s long-time rival Lionel Messi came out on top as he ended up lifting the World Cup trophy.

However, when almost every Argentine was busy celebrating their nation’s historic triumph, one Argentine refused to do so. It was none other than Cristiano Ronaldo’s girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez who’s Argentine by birth.

Georgina Rodriguez’s loyalty to her partner prevented her from celebrating Argentina’s World Cup victory. There was no single congratulatory post from Georgina‘s behalf to Lionel Messi’s Argentina. Most fans believe that it was Rodriguez’s love for Ronaldo that prevented her from doing so. However, some can’t help but wonder whether Georgina Rodriguez was banned from celebrating Argentina’s victory.

Irrespective of the speculations, Georgina Rodriguez wholeheartedly supported Ronaldo throughout the tournament. She was frequently seen in the stadiums expressing her support for Portugal. Moreover, after Portugal’s elimination, Georgina was one of the first ones to harshly criticize Fernando Santos’ decision to start Ronaldo on the bench.
