David de Gea stole the show again with his social media presence. The Spanish goalkeeper tweeted a cryptic message after his former club, Manchester United, suffered a 1-0 defeat in the Premier League against Newcastle United.
Manchester United’s misery on the road continued as Newcastle United gave them their sixth defeat of the season through an Anthony Gordon winner in the second half. The talking points were plenty after the match but the social media chatter was stolen away by David de Gea when he tweeted just a single emoji after the defeat.
The keeper used the cold emoji which could mean multiple things in this situation. The message might point towards the weather difficulties that Manchester United had to endure before the match, which made them travel on the road for more than three hours to Newcastle as compared to a quick 20-minute flight.

The emoji might also be a sarcastic response to the ongoing struggles of Erik ten Hag who was again in the spotlight for his man-management tactics for incidents involving Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford. Or it could be just a direct shot at Andre Onana, his replacement at the club, who is off to a below-par start to his tenure at Manchester United since his summer move from Inter Milan.
There could be numerous reasons why David de Gea tweeted this emoji but the timing of the tweet after the away loss of Manchester United added the necessary juice to the social media buzz. The post reached more than 10 million fans on ‘X’ and was highly debated among online fans who keep a close watch on Manchester United.
Manchester United legend Lee Sharpe claims it was an error to let David de Gea leave
David de Gea’s exit from Manchester United in the summer received a polarizing response from fans and experts. Those responses that were against the decision have grown stronger after the horror start of Andre Onana’s career at Manchester United.
The former Ajax keeper was again in focus in midweek in the UCL against Galatasaray. The keeper gave away two goals from free kicks with two errors, which helped the Turkish club earn a vital 3-3 draw in Istanbul. The performance prompted Manchester United, Lee Sharpe to vocalize his opinion in favor of David de Gea.
Sharpe commented about the exit of the Spanish goalkeeper: “It’s certainly looking like an error now. It was a bit weird the way they shuffled De Gea the door – I know he made a couple of high-profile mistakes last season, but he was so consistent in the time that he was there.”

Sharpe added by touching on the signing of Onana: “It’s always a big risk bringing in someone who doesn’t know the Premier League to be your first-choice goalkeeper. In hindsight, it may have been better to keep De Gea for another year and have Andre Onana as an understudy to let him get used to the atmosphere and expectations, because he’s certainly costing the team points at the moment.”
The suggestion of using Onana as an understudy of David de Gea is still possible, as Manchester United is being linked with the Spanish keeper in the January transfer window. The keeper has failed to move to any club since leaving the English side and might make a dramatic return to the club.
