Erik ten Hag and Manchester United have been having a turbulent time this past week, to say the least. And Brighton made sure to pile on even more. After a horrendous international break, which saw many off-the-field controversies for the Red Devils, they were eager to make it onto the field and perform. But the seagulls from Brighton sank their ship at Old Trafford.
Brighton and Hove Albion thrashed Manchester United 3-1 on Saturday, September 16. Former United player Danny Welbeck gave Brighton an early lead in the 20th minute by slotting home a 10-yard finish from the center of the area following a brilliant team move. In the 34th minute, Rashford had a driving run inside from the left, but his shot hit the post.
After six minutes, Rashford appeared to have assisted Hojlund’s first United goal. But VAR later disallowed it as Rashford had taken the ball just over the left byline before teeing up Hojlund’s goal.

Rashford MUST cross that into Højlund there — trust me he’d have got there and scored. pic.twitter.com/cI2SfqtTwB

United had the best opportunity to equalize in the 51st minute. Rashford made a stellar driving run inside from the left flank and could have squared the ball to Hojlund, who was waiting at the center for an easy tap-in. Instead, the England International chose to go for a wide shot, which turned out to be a weak attempt from a promising position, hitting the side netting.
Brighton scored two minutes later before finally hitting the last nail in the coffin in the 73rd minute. After the 3-1 win, Brighton jumped to the fourth spot.
Earlier, former Premier League legend Tim Sherwood blamed ten Hag for the situation and raised questions about his credibility. Fans have noticed that his starting 11 always has players out of possession. He has his preferences, and his in-game management is questionable.
Fans now erupt on social media over the team’s miserable situation. Plenty of them have blamed Rashford’s unmindful attempts for the defeat against Brighton.
Rashford attempted nine shots against Brighton, his most ever in a single Premier League match and the most by a Manchester United player without scoring in the competition since Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 12 shots against Burnley in October 2016.
Marcus Rashford’s new contract at Manchester United, how much does he earn?
