Lionel Messi has been one of the hottest topics at the FIFA World Cup 2022. He has managed to lead Argentina into the round of 16 after a rocky start in the group stages. For context, the South American country was arguably one of the favorites for this year’s World Cup. They boasted an unbeaten streak of 36 games and were only one game away from beating the most in international soccer, which Italy held.
However, that did not go according to plan after Messi and Co. lost to Saudi Arabia in the opening game despite a goal from the 7x Ballon d’Or winner. Many even expected that Argentina would soon be out of the tournament. Messi did not let that happen in the end, as he found the back of the net against Mexico once again, and managed to put in a shift against Robert Lewandowski’s Poland in the last game of the group stages.
Very recently, the former Barcelona superstar faced Australia in the round of 16. He scored in the 35th minute, slotting the ball home beautifully past Matt Ryan. The goal meant that he surpassed Diego Maradona’s count for World Cup goals as well.
Apart from the goal, Messi was incredible on the night. He was involved in every aspect of Argentina’s attacks, proving that he still got it at the age of 35. Many believe that Messi found his golden touch once again, except for one person in particular.
Piers Morgan believes Lionel Messi wouldn’t be able to perform against good teams
After the game, Piers Morgan tweeted, “The relentless Messi fan-girling by the whole BBC punditry team is getting excruciatingly obsequious. Getting worried one of them might have an ‘accident’ in the studio. Calm yourselves, lads. He had a good game against an average side. See how he does against a good team.”

He claims that the fact that the BBC team had appreciated Messi for his good performance was too much to bear. Together with that, Morgan believes the Argentinian striker would not be able to perform against teams who are better than Australia. This might be an exaggeration but Morgan has publicly been a Cristiano Ronaldo fan for quite a while now.
For those who don’t know, Piers was even in the spotlight when Ronaldo decided to drop that bombshell interview about his life at Manchester United. In the end, the 5x Ballon d’Or winner left the club due to complications with the board. This resulted in a $19 million loss for him as well.
