The soccer-crazy people of Argentina were elated as Lionel Messi led Argentine to World Cup glory in December last year. Argentina defeated France in a blockbuster final which saw Messi defeat his PSG teammate, Kylian Mbappe. While the Argentine people’s euphoria is deservingly unending, one Argentine farmer has taken it a step further.
A farmer has planted corn seeds on a 124-acre farm, which when seen from above, make up Messi’s visage. The field is in a place called Los Condores, which is in the Cordoba province of Argentina. This remarkable feat has been accomplished by using a computer algorithm that determined where the seeds had to be planted to make Messi’s face.
The farmer, Maximiliano Spinazze, talked about his unique tribute to Lionel Messi. He said, “For me, Messi is unbeatable. Now, they are world champions, I am delighted this can be expressed by planting the crop. “ However, special credits should also be given to Carlos Faricelli, the man who designed the algorithm.

Faricelli explained how he designed the algorithm for any farmer “who dared to plan it.” Faricelli said, “I had the idea to make a code that goes in the seeders with Messi’s face as a tribute. So when this corn grows and an aerial shot is taken, where the plants are closer together and the ground is less visible, a more intense green contrasts with where there are fewer plants, and then this kind of agriculture art is created.”
Argentina, apart from being a soccer-mad nation, is also an important producer of corn. According to reports, Argentina is the sixth-largest producer of corn. Thus, this feat not only resembles Argentina’s World Cup glory but also their agricultural prowess.

Many fans have made memes on this incident, calling Messi a “farmer’s league player.” The context of these memes is that in soccer, some soccer leagues like the Premier League or La Liga are considered to be very tough and competitive. However, leagues like the Ligue 1, where PSG plays, or the Bundesliga, is considered to be a farmer’s league.
The reason is that there is a lack of competition in the Ligue 1 or the Bundesliga, since in those leagues, only a single team, PSG and Bayern Munich respectively, dominates. For further context, PSG has won the Ligue 1 eight times in the past nine years. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich has won the Bundesliga consecutively for the past ten years since 2013. Thus, fans have related Messi’s cornfield image to the fact that he plays in a “farmer’s league.”
