In a shocking series of events, former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar suffered a brain hemorrhage. The legendary goalkeeper has been taken to the hospital where he has been admitted to the intensive care unit.
Edwin van der Sar’s former club, AFC Ajax, released a statement offering their support. The statement reads, “On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain. He’s currently iMoren hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition. Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow. Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.“

According to reports, van der Sar was holidaying on an island in Croatia when the unfortunate incident occurred. He was immediately taken to the hospital on a helicopter. Meanwhile, there’s no current update about his condition. In cases of brain hemorrhage, the first 24 hours are extremely crucial.
Although this is not the first time that van der Sar’s family has been plagued with illness. Back in 2009, his wife Annemarie had also suffered a brain hemorrhage. Since then, the couple has even started their foundation, the Edwin van der Sar Foundation, for supporting people with brain injuries.

Not only fans but also various soccer clubs have sent their messages of support for the former Ajax goalkeeper. His former club, Juventus, wrote, “Get well soon, Edwin. The entire world is thinking of you.” FIFA‘s official Twitter handle also shared a message for the 2008 Champions League winner. Edwin van der Sar has played for some of the biggest soccer clubs in the world like Juventus, Ajax, Manchester United, and Fulham.
He won the Champions League twice in his career-once with Ajax in the 1994-95 season and another with United in the 2007-09 season. Currently, he was acting as the CEO of Ajax but finally decided to step down back in May this year. However, the club has announced that van der Sar would remain at the club till August to help with the transitioning process.
