Manchester United parted ways with their former goalkeeper David de Gea in July 2023. The Spanish goalkeeper had been at the club for a long time. Over the years, the 32-year-old has developed into one of the most important players for the club.
David de Gea played a mammoth sum of 545 matches for Manchester United. During his stint at the club, he managed to keep a respectable sum of 190 clean sheets. David conceded 590 goals in all of his matches for the Red Devils. The 32-year-old joined United in 2011.
As per the reports, The Red Devils are set to re-sign the Spanish goalkeeper on a short-term contract. This reported rumor has come amidst the worries of the club falling short of alternatives when their current goalkeeper Andre Onana leaves for the AFCON (Africa Cup of Nations) in January 2024.

When one really explores the chances of United resigning David de Gea, it can be inferred that the shaky performances of Andre Onana in recent times have left a certain spot of concern among the fans. It would be hard to say that the management wouldn’t have seen some of the errors that their $57 million signing, Onana, made in some of his matches at the club.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper was at fault in United’s first game of the Premier League season against Wolves. He almost conceded a penalty. Onana then made a howler in the club’s Champions League clash against Galatasaray. The 27-year-old did recently save a penalty against Copenhagen in the club’s Champions League win. But, his overall performances have been below par.
It wouldn’t be a surprise for the fans if the Red Devils were really looking to resign their former goalkeeper. Also, the reason behind it could be more than just replacing Onana when he leaves for AFCON. However, no official announcements from the club have come out yet regarding the resignation of David. So, it would be tough to say if the reported rumors are true or not.
Why did David de Gea leave Manchester United?
According to the reports, the main reason behind the 32-year-old goalkeeper leaving the club in the summer was his failure to comply with the terms of a new contract at the club. The veteran’s contract at the club ended on June 30, 2023.
The negotiations for a new contract between the player and the club didn’t go through the door. As per the reports, the club’s hierarchy dwelled upon the negotiations for a new contract with the player for some months. But, reportedly, the club failed to formally offer the terms of the contract to the Spanish goalkeeper.
The reports further reflect that the Spanish international player agreed to a contract with the club for a lesser sum of money in the earlier part of the year. But, reportedly, the club’s hierarchy didn’t sign the contract papers. It remains to be seen if the player does return for a second stint with the club in the near future and how the club approaches his contract structure.
