The 2022 FIFA World Cup has proven to be yet another classic soccer tournament that we have all been waiting for. It has produced various upsets like Saudi Arabia’s win over Argentina, Germany’s loss to Japan, and Morocco’s win over Belgium to book their round of 16 spot as well. It was for this reason that many teams were eagerly waiting to see how Luis Suarez-led Uruguay finish in the group stages.

Today, they played against Ghana, 12 years after that eventful game in South Africa. It was one of the games that fans were anticipating when the groups were first announced. And to the soccer world’s surprise, it did not disappoint one bit. Uruguay crashed out of the World Cup despite having a good chance before today’s game. And fortunately for Ghana, they got their revenge on the country that sent them out in 2010.
Uruguayan players try to manhandle the referee
After the game, Uruguayan players surrounded the match referee, Daniel Siebert. They even followed him down the tunnel even after the final whistle. The reason for this would be that Siebert did not award Uruguay a penalty when Edinson Cavani went down inside the box toward the end of the game.

Unfortunately for them, Siebert did not award a penalty even when Darwin Nunez was fouled in the 57th minute. Despite instructions from VAR to award the decision, Siebert stood his ground. It seems like this did not go down well with the Uruguay players. After the game ended, they tried to “Manhandle” and “Harass” the German referee for his in-match decisions. Many have had their say on Twitter regarding the matter.

A user tweeted, “No excuse for manhandling the ref. A disgrace. Never acceptable in any circumstances. And anyway, wrong ref. Uruguay eliminated by that scandalous VAR penalty late on v Portugal.” It seems like there is an opinion among people that the decision should have been awarded but the Uruguayan players were wrong to treat the referee the way they did.
Fans brutally react to Luis Suarez crying
For those who don’t know, Ghana faced Uruguay in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in the quarterfinals. It was one of the best games of the tournament, mainly because of how equally biased the game was. Both sides were fighting it out to take the win. Diego Forlan continued his remarkable scoring form in South Africa that year and he opened the scoring for Uruguay on the night after Sulley Muntari helped Ghana take the lead.
After that, the game went on goalless. That was until the last minute of extra time. Ghana managed to get a shot on target through Dominic Adiyiah’s header. But when Suarez used both of his hands to block the shot off the line, it broke Ghana fans’ hearts on the spot. They were awarded a penalty after the Uruguayan striker was sent off, which they missed. Eventually, Uruguay proceeded to the last 4 after winning the penalty shootout.
It seems like soccer fans have turned against the former Barcelona striker after his country crashed out of the World Cup. One said, “Luis Suarez – the biggest crybaby in the history of the game,” together with images of Suarez crying on multiple occasions.

It seems like many believe that Ghana have finally gotten their revenge on Suarez and Uruguay 12 years later. Although they didn’t contribute it to directly, they would be happy to know that Suarez shed tears after the game.
For context, South Korea beat Portugal in the other game of Group H through a 92nd-minute winner from Hwang Hee-chan. This meant that they moved up to second place in the group, on account of fair play, above Uruguay.
