Lionel Messi has had an eventful World Cup so far in Qatar. Argentina went into the tournament as arguably one of the favorites. The main reason for that would be the fact that they were on an unbeaten record of 36 games. The entire soccer world expected the South American country to have a strong start to the tournament against Saudi Arabia.
However, to Argentina fans’ dismay, Messi and Co. lost 2-1 to the Asian country in the first game. Messi did well to convert in style from the spot but it was to no avail after Saudi Arabia pulled it back in the second half. The entire world stopped, mainly because no one expected Saudi Arabia to pull through against one of the strongest soccer teams in the world.
Can Lionel Messi lead Argentina to the World Cup?
There is no doubt that Messi is Argentina’s best player at the World Cup this year. He had to lead them to a win against Mexico very recently, and he did so too. The PSG superstar scored a beautiful goal against Mexico to give them a 1-0 lead. Just a while later, Enzo Fernandez curled the ball into the top right corner after Messi passed the ball to him after a corner kick.
Messi has revealed that the first game was one that his children could not digest. He said, “My family always accompany me, they suffer a lot. My children were sick after the first game, Mateo was crying a lot.”

It seems like the loss to Saudi Arabia wasn’t only sour to Messi, but to his children as well. His sons, Thiago and Mateo, have always rooted for their dad from the sidelines. Recently, Messi also paid a touching tribute to them at the World Cup.

Mateo and the rest of the family must be happy now that Argentina has finally found the win they were looking for at the tournament. After Messi scored his goal, his family celebrated in a wholesome way in a viral clip. Messi’s wife, Antonela Roccuzzo was seen hugging both her sons and celebrating her husband’s beautiful goal.
Argentina has announced itself at the tournament this year with the win against Mexico. Now, they would have to focus on building momentum and winning their next game against Robert Lewandowski’s Poland.
