While the entire world is busy celebrating Lionel Messi winning the World Cup, PSG is not following suit. They are apparently not going to provide any celebratory ceremony for the world champ and it led to fans blaming Kylian Mbappe!
Lionel Messi had the time of his life for the past month! On December 18, 2022, Messi finally completed his goal of winning the FIFA World Cup. His Argentina team beat France in the tiebreakers to win the third World Cup in its history. Following that, celebrations continued for almost one month. But, life goes on and Messi recently returned to PSG.
After his heartbreaking exit from Barcelona, Messi moved to French side Paris Saint-Germain with a ton of fanfare. Although he had a bad season compared to the standards he set for himself, Messi is back to his best in the ongoing 2022-23 season. The World Cup winner has scored 12 goals and provided 14 assists across all competitions this season.
He is also one of the reasons why the PSG team is flying in the current season. Along with their dominating performances in Ligue 1, PSG has also performed extremely well in the Champions League group stages as well! So it is quite bizarre to see PSG not holding a tribute ceremony for Leo Messi. Fans recently saw another Argentine hero, Emiliano Martinez, get a warm welcome to his club side.
Even Lisandro Martinez, who did not have a big role to play in the competition, got a great ovation from Manchester United. So PSG snubbing Messi is not sitting right with the fans. French outlet Le Parisien was the first to report on the matter. Messi fans all around the globe are outraged by the news.

Underneath the Instagram post from Pubity Sport, fans expressed their frustration about the matter. user zayd.mohamed.almasri wrote, “They don’t deserve him.” User vibu_prasad hinted that Messi should consider leaving PSG and wrote, “Should literally come to Camp Nou. He will get God Level treatment.”
However, user pacwyner_ smelled conspiracy and wrote, “Mbappe’s decision and PSG have to do it.” User javiercastro89 echoed the sentiment and humorously wrote, “Mbappe: Sorry bro this is not Barcelona.”
So there are fans who blame Kylian Mbappe for the incident. However, it is important to note that it is just pure fan speculation. There is no official word on whether Mbappe actually had anything to do with the situation.
Is Kylian Mbappe behind PSG’s decision to not felicitate Lionel Messi?
Fans will definitely wonder why PSG is skipping a ceremony for Lionel Messi. As previously mentioned, Messi beat France in the final to lift the World Cup. So it is an understandable decision from PSG as they are a French side. Hence, throwing a public ceremony for Messi would have caused French fans to voice their opinion against it.
However, that does not mean that Lionel Messi did not receive any private congratulatory messages from the PSG board. As far as fans blaming Kylian Mbappe, there are some reasons for the fan speculation. There were reports that Mbappe was extremely unhappy at PSG and wanted to leave the club.
Although he had a lot of power in the internal matters of the club, he still wanted a transfer. Mbappe had a brilliant World Cup and scored 8 goals. So, seeing his PSG teammate Messi win the competition had to hurt him. But does he have the power to veto Messi’s celebrations? There is room for fan speculation on the matter.
But, the 35-year-old is apparently happy at the soccer club. Reports came out immediately after the FIFA World Cup that he would sign a contract extension with PSG for a year. Will this decision not to felicitate Messi put the contract extension in jeopardy? Only time will tell.
