According to reports from The Athletic, Mason Greenwood was not the easiest young soccer star to deal with. While Greenwood was establishing himself as the protagonist at United, at the same time, he had already built a reputation for lacking discipline.
Mason Greenwood faced disciplinary actions at Manchester United in the past
Mason Greenwood’s history as a troublemaker is well-established in the dressing rooms of Manchester United. Back in 2020, Greenwood was seen outside his home and accused of breaking the covid-19 regulations. The 21-year-old was seen driving his Mercedes-Benz around the southwest of Manchester.
Moreover, Greenwood further broke the covid-19 regulations by regularly hosting parties at his residence. It has been also reported that Greenwood often comes late to training. Former Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tried to protect Greenwood by refuting this claim, but the word ultimately got out. His disciplinary issues even became prominent in the national team.

During 2020, Greenwood was handed his England debut against Iceland when he came on as a 78th-minute substitute in a UEFA Nations League game. However, Greenwood couldn’t play in the next match against Denmark and was sent home. This was done because it was found out that Greenwood and Manchester City star Phil Foden had broken covid regulations and invited some girls to the team hotel.
Mason Greenwood’s “dead” comment on Cristiano Ronaldo irked soccer fans
In addition to his disciplinary issues, Mason Greenwood also has a reputation for blunt speaking. Since his early days, it was reported that Greenwood wouldn’t hesitate to tell off a fellow soccer player. A spokesperson said, “He knew he was a good player and was cutting, he wasn’t shy about telling someone they were s***. When you hear that you’d think, ‘Can’t be talking like that’.”
However, even Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t spared from Greenwood’s insolence. When Ronaldo was at his former club Real Madrid, Greenwood claimed that the Portuguese star was “dead“, which meant that Ronaldo was well past his prime. However, when Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United in 2021, there were no signs of any problems between him and Greenwood. Moreover, it was reported that the United officials gave Greenwood a talking-to and instructed Greenwood to change his mentality.
Will Greenwood return to Manchester United?
It’s been more than a year since Mason Greenwood has played for Manchester United. His last appearance for United was during a 1-0 victory over West Ham at Old Trafford in January last year. Shortly after, Greenwood was arrested over charges of rape and sexual assault made by his girlfriend, Harriet Robson.
The charges against Mason Greenwood were dropped in February this year. The Crown Prosecution Service stated that the withdrawal of key witnesses meant that the investigation couldn’t be carried on. However, this didn’t mean that he could rejoin the United team after being suspended for a year. Instead, the club stated that they will carry forward their own investigation on Greenwood.
Currently, there’s no news about when Greenwood will make his return to Manchester United. It has been already reported that Greenwood wouldn’t feature for the club this season. However, the United fans have made it clear that they don’t want Greenwood back in the team.
