Argentina beat Mexico in a heated encounter in the World Cup last night. La Albiceleste won 2-0 with two goals coming in the second half. The first half of the game was a poor performance from both sides, but another Lionel Messi wonder goal saw Argentina go ahead, followed by a great goal by Enzo Fernandes. Mexico needs a very lucky matchday 3 to qualify for the knockout stages.

Argentina plays Poland next on 30th November, and Messi has called the match a must-win. Poland is in better spirits after beating Saudi Arabia 2-0. Robert Lewandowski broke his World Cup duck and scored the 77th goal of his international career with Poland.
Lionel Messi scores his eighth world cup goal against Mexico
Messi has been unfortunate in his chase for a World Cup. Argentina has won the coveted trophy twice in its history. The Argentine winger had reached the final in 2014, only for a late extra-time winner by Mario Gotze to steal his dream away. Much like Ronaldo, the World Cup trophy has evaded Messi.

Lionel Messi scored his eighth World Cup goal against Mexico last night. Messi is a big name in Argentina’s history as one of the top goal-scorers in the World Cup for their nation. He comes behind Gabriel Batistuta (10) and is level with Diego Maradona on eight goals. If this is indeed Messi’s last World Cup, he would have to score three more goals to become the top goal scorer for Argentina in World Cups.
Argentina to take on Poland next
Messi scored one of his trademark wonder goals against Mexico in the 64th minute to break the deadlock. The jubilation in Messi and his Argentine teammate’s eyes could be seen as they moved closer to securing their place in the knockout stages. In a post on his social media, Messi called the upcoming game against Poland a must-win game.

“We had to win today and we could do it. There’s another final coming up on Wednesday and we have to keep fighting all together… Let’s go Argentina!!!” read Messi’s post. If Saudi Arabia and Mexico draw, Argentina would qualify unless their goal difference drops below Saudi Arabia’s -1. A win would secure their position as group winners.
