Rose Bertram has been the subject of media coverage for a long time now. The Belgian model has been linked with PSG soccer star Kylian Mbappe for a long time now. However, neither Rose nor Mbappe has confirmed any of the dating rumors between the two. Although, even if the rumors are true, this will not be the first time that Rose Bertram is dating a soccer star, as she used to date Gregory van der Wiel.

Rose Bertram was in a relationship before with Dutch footballer Gregory van der Wiel. Although the couple has separated now, they had two children together. Both the children are living with and being raised by their mother.

Where is Gregory van der Wiel from?

Gregory van der Wiel was born in Amsterdam on February 3, 1988. He was born to a Curacao father and a Dutch mother. Gregory, the eldest child, has three younger sisters: Layla, Ambar, and Hind.

He has never openly spoken about his religious beliefs. However, during an interview, Gregory stated “I believe in God, but do not believe in faith. I keep my superstition for myself,” thus admitting that he does believe in god.

Which soccer team did van der Wiel play for?

Gregory van der Wiel’s first soccer club was RKSV DCG, an Amsterdam-based club. Gregory started his professional career as a soccer player when he was scouted by Eredivisie giants AFC Ajax at the age of 7. However, in 2002, Gregory was transferred to HFC Harlem due to “mental problems.” Gregory played in Harlem for three years, where he got his “wake-up call.“

During a later interview, he said, “When I was there I realized how spoiled I was. At Ajax, everything was always well organized. We received a new kit every season and were picked up with minivans and brought to the club. At Harlem, I arrived in a totally different world. The accommodation was much worse, we played in five-year-old outfits, and had to find our own way to the training.“

Gregory admitted that his time at HFC Harlem helped his social development. In 2005, Gregory returned to his former club Ajax, which kick-started his professional career. Gregory went on to play for clubs like Paris Saint-Germain, Fenerbahce, Cagliari, and Toronto FC. In 2010, Gregory received the Johan Cruyff for Young Player of the Year in the Netherlands.

Gregory made his international debut for the senior Dutch team in 2009. He had previously represented his country in the under-19 national team as well as the under-21 team. Gregory was a part of the Dutch team, which reached the finals of the FIFA World Cup 2010 where they lost against Spain due to Andres Iniesta’s late winner. Although Gregory started the final against Spain and played the full 120 minutes, he eventually had to settle for the runners-up medal.

Gregory was also a part of the Dutch team in the Euro 2012 competition. However, his performance during the tournament was subpar and he received a lot of criticism. He missed the FIFA World Cup 2014 due to injury problems.

What is Gregory van der Wiel’s net worth?

As of 2022, Gregory van der Wiel’s net worth is estimated to be around $5 million. The 32-year-old right-back last played for Toronto FC in 2019, after which he retired. However, he admitted during an interview that he wants to make a comeback as he “still has the itch to play football.“

Gregory van der Wiel has spoken about the anxiety and panic attacks he has suffered over the past year.

He has spoken out about his mental health and his hopes of playing a part for RKC Waalwijk this season.

Gregory is currently a free agent and is trying to return to football. Gregory had taken a break from soccer to deal with his mental health problems. It would be interesting to see whether the former Dutch international can actually make a comeback to competitive soccer.

Why did Rose Bertram and Gregory break up?

Gregory started dating Rose Bertram in 2013. They met each other when Gregory was playing for PSG. The couple stayed together for 8 years in Paris. The couple had their first child, Naleya, who was born in 2018 while their second child, Zaylee, was born in 2021.

The couple separated from each other in 2022. Rose revealed during an interview that the primary reason for their breakup was Gregory’s mental health issues. Gregory himself has talked about his mental issues.

Gregory said, “I carried so many emotions with me, that I have been bottling up for all these years. Living like that is not healthy. You have to be able to express your emotions somewhere, somehow. Only after I stopped playing football, my body had the time to process all of it.“

He further added, “Since I did not give myself the chance to let it all out in an earlier stage, I started having panic attacks. Initially, I thought these panic attacks were caused by something physical, but that is not the case. It is not something physical, but rather mental. Often, people only become aware of the consequences when something bad happens, but by then it is already too late. This was also the case for me.”

Even Rose sympathized with her ex-boyfriend, saying that she wanted to help him but she could not. Rose said, “There are a lot of people who deal with this. It’s not talked about enough and in my case, if you don’t know enough about it, it’s very difficult to understand that person. It hasn’t always been easy to deal with. It breaks my heart that he feels this way and that I can’t help it.”

However, Rose admitted that even though she is single now and has separated from Gregory, the two still try to maintain a good relationship. Rose said, “He is the father of my children and I would be very sorry if we broke up in a bad way.“

Where is Gregory van der Wiel now?

Gregory van der Wiel retired after playing his last game for Toronto FC in 2019. After his retirement, Gregory spent his time tackling his mental health issues. He has openly spoken about it in interviews, trying to normalize the stigma of mental health.

Gregory revealed that the Eredivisie-based club, RKC Waalwijk, has welcomed him with open arms and is helping him to make his comeback. He said, “After great conversations with the head coach and technical director it was a no-brainer for me.” Although his comeback isn’t guaranteed, Gregory is trying his best and has thanked the club officials for their unconditional support.
