- The UEFA Champions League is expected to come to an end in the 2024-25 season.
FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are celebrating a huge win after the recent ruling on the European Super League. Back in 2021, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid proposed a new European inter-club soccer tournament alongside ten other clubs. Despite fervent protests from UEFA and FIFA, it appears that the tournament will take place after all.
According to the European Court of Justice’s rulings, UEFA and FIFA breached EU rules in their attempt to prevent the Super League from happening. The Court stated that organizing such a tournament is an economic activity. Hence, UEFA and FIFA have no grounds for stopping the Super League. However, while the ruling has been beneficial to FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, other clubs might not think so.

The Super League project, masterminded by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, was supported by twelve clubs. However, amid the threat of sanctions from FIFA and UEFA, all clubs withdrew from the project except FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. However, there is a concern about whether UEFA will prevent the two founding clubs from playing in the UEFA Champions League.
The UEFA Champions League is expected to come to an end in the 2024-25 season. However, while both FC Barcelona and Real Madrid have qualified for the knockouts in the 2023-2024 season, they might not get to play next year. However, there seems to be no legitimate legal basis for UEFA to ban the two Spanish giants from playing in the Champions League.
UEFA president condemns FC Barcelona and Real Madrid
Meanwhile, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has brutally condemned FC Barcelona and Real Madrid after the Super League ruling. Ceferin has been against the idea of the European Super League since the beginning. He said, “We will not try to stop them. They can create whatever they want.” He further rebuked the two clubs and claimed that soccer isn’t for sale. Aleksander, however, did issue a warning to the two La Liga behemoths.

The UEFA president indicated that while Barcelona and Real Madrid will be able to bring the Super League to life, they won’t have much support. Ceferin’s words are proving to be true; clubs like Manchester United, Bayern Munich, and PSG have already pleaded no contest to the Super League. However, only time will tell whether the Super League will have any potential future.
