Recently Bayern Munich’s players were suggested to choose a player who has retired with whom they would have wanted to share the pitch. However, different players came up with different answers. But, one answer among them was quite fascinating to know for the fans as it involved the legend of the soccer Lionel Messi.
It was the choice of the Matthijs de Ligt. The Bayern Munich number four chose the Argentinian soccer player Lionel Messi as the player whom he would like to share the pitch with. However, the question was about choosing a retired player. But, ironically Messi hasn’t retired.

This act by Bayern’s defender might not go down well with the fans. It can be inferred that the player considers that Argentina’s number ten has ended his career after his $54 million salary transfer. Fans could take this as disrespect for Inter Miami. Leo has been a legend of the game. Seeing, Ligt saying his name in this scenario, is a bit of an awkward one for the soccer fraternity to digest.
Lionel recently joined the Major League Soccer (MLS) side Inter Miami in 2023. He is already proving to be a very important player for the club. In just his twelve matches for his team so far, the number ten has netted eleven goals.
In fact, Miami has struggled to win their matches without him, as they have lost their last three games, in which the Argentinian didn’t play. The 36-year-old has also contributed by registering five assists for his side.
Matthijs de Ligt signed for the Bundesliga club Bayern Munich in July 2022. The Dutch defender has played forty-nine matches for the German club till now. Apart from his defensive contributions at the back, the player also has four goals for his side.
What have legends such as Ronaldinho and David Beckham stated about Lionel Messi?
Brazilian legend Ronaldinho was of the opinion that Argentina’s number ten is undoubtedly the greatest in soccer. The 43-year-old lauded his former teammate by saying- “He is the best in the world”. Ronaldinho shared the dressing room with Leo during their stint at La Liga club FC Barcelona.
The England legend and the co-owner of the MLS club Inter Miami, David Beckham, also lauded the Argentinian as the best soccer player he has ever seen. He even compared the player with his Portuguese counterpart, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Beckham was of the opinion, “They can have similarities in their skills”. But, insisted that Messi is still the greatest. Beckham also attributed the fact that it’s a privilege for soccer to see both legends play in this era.
