However, it looked like the fans of the German club had already started their title victory even before the game began. The Bayer Leverkusen fans have found a unique way to thank their coach for their historic win.
Bayer Leverkusen fans honor Xabi Alonso by renaming a street
The red and black lined street leading up to the club’s stadium BayArena was earlier known as Bismarck Stadium. However, Bayer Leverkusen has now renamed it to Xabi Alonso Allee which translates to Xabi Alonso street in English. Thousands of Leverkusen fans thronged the streets as the fans celebrated their manager’s amazing feat.
Before the match, the fans looked pretty optimistic that their team would complete the job on Sunday, April 14, 2024. Even the coach himself did not shy away from an early title win for Bayer Leverkusen. The Spaniard said (via France 24), “It’s good we have many chances to do it, but we want to do it (on Sunday).”

And this is exactly what his team did as Bayer Leverkusen won its first-ever Bundesliga title by beating Bayer Leverkusen 5-0 at home. The match was simply a highlight of the German club’s exciting playing style that propelled Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title.
Leverkusen wins its first-ever Bundesliga by defeating Werder Bremen
The general feeling around the club was that Leverkusen would be able to seal the Bundesliga title race against Werder Bremen itself. After all, Bayer Leverkusen was 13 points ahead of FC Bayern Munich with 5 games to go, who looked set to lose out on the German League title after 12 years. However, only a few could have imagined the way Bayer Leverkusen completed the job.
The club’s stellar striker Victor Boniface started the party in the 25th minute with a well-scored penalty. The Nigerian’s efforts have been crucial for the club’s title victory, scoring 11 goals and assisting another 8 in his debut season in the Bundesliga. Hence it was only fitting when the Nigerian scored in the match, that won Leverkusen the coveted title.
The scoreline was to remain 1-0 at the stroke of halftime before former Arsenal player Granit Xhaka scored a terrific long-range strike. The Swiss midfielder will deservedly add a league title to his great legacy as he won none at Arsenal.

It was then time for the Florian Wirtz show. The young German attacking midfielder will be immortalized in Leverkusen history due to his hat trick against Werder Bremen. Florian Wirtz made it 11 goals and 10 assists in 29 games for his club.
Certainly, the 20-year-old has shown incredible maturity to come back from an ACL injury suffered in the previous season to help his team win the title in the 23/24 season. The Bayer Leverkusen fans will be hoping to keep this young gem at their club for many more years to come.
Werder Bremen was no match for the new German champions in the game. Leverkusen had 20 shots of which 10 were on target in comparison to the away team’s 7 shots (3 on target). Bayer Leverkusen also had the ball for most of the game and a better xG (3.30) than Bremen (0.69).

With the win, Bayer Leverkusen closes on securing yet another record. The club is still yet to lose a game in the league and can join the likes of Athletic Bilbao, Real Madrid, Manchester United, etc. who won their first-ever league title going undefeated.
Also, Bayer Leverkusen have been unbeaten in their last 43 games, with the record of the longest unbeaten run by a club since 2000 stands at 49 with Juventus. After the league victory, Bayer Leverkusen will now be hoping to secure these two huge records and also win the UEFA Europa League where they are one foot into the semi-finals.
