Mexican soccer has finally found its very own version of the French soccer legend Zinedine Zidane. Zidane, one of the soccer’s all-time greats, has marked his influence on several young soccer players. Players like David Beckham, Rodri, Ronaldinho, and Kylian Mbappe have all named Zidane as their idol. However, one particular player has taken his love for the French icon to the next level.
A young Mexican soccer player’s father has named his son Zinedine Sidane after Zinedine Zidane. Sidane, who plays for the Mexican club Zapopan Halcones, recently signed a deal with Chivas de Guadalajara. Sidane, who is still 17, just signed his first professional contract with Chivas. The Mexican talent is supposed to join Chivas’ U-18 side in the coming days.

Nicknamed ‘El Mago’, Zinedine Sidane has grown viral more for his name and less because of his performances. Several fans have reacted to the news and have shared thousands of hilarious reactions. One fan even wrote, “His dad knows ball.” Nevertheless, the Chivas supporters would hope that Sidane would be worth the hype. The 17-year-old has previously admitted that playing for the ‘Rojiblancos’ was his dream.
After being named after the 1998 World Cup winner, Sidane would have some huge boots to fill. However, currently, the ex-Zapopan Halcones star will aim to reach the first team of Chivas. Still only 17, Sidane would have a lot of time to try to win a Champions League, the World Cup, or a Ballon d’Or like his idol.
Zinedine Sidane’s father explained why he named his son after Zinedine Zidane
Meanwhile, Zinedine Sidane’s father once explained the reason behind his son’s name. The father of the young Mexican also revealed why his son’s name contains an ‘S’ instead of a ‘Z’. In an interview with the news outlet So Foot, Sidane’s father said, “Why with an S and not a Z? Because when registering it in the civil registry in Mexico, the person did not write it correctly.”
Moreover, Sidane, whose full name is Zinedine Sidane Hernandez Quezada, also once admitted that he hasn’t ever been mocked for his name. Although the 2006-born Mexican winger, who also plays as a midfielder, did reveal that he has a soft spot for the Brazilian star Neymar Jr. Interestingly, Sidane’s elder brother Eder Jair, is also named after the legendary Brazilian soccer icons Eder and Jairzinho.
