Scaloni has an older brother called Mauro Scaloni. Mauro is two years older than Lionel. Their parents are said to have been farmers in their hometown but not a lot of information is available. However, it is known that even today a large part of Scaloni’s family still lives there.

Scaloni began his career in the Argentine Primera División in the year 1995. He played for local club Newell’s Old Boys and a year later moved on to Estudiantes de La Plata. Again the next year, he was on the move to Spain to join Deportivo de La Coruña in December 1997.
