When you talk about the greatest welterweights of all time, it will be very hard to keep the name “Kamaru Usman” out of the discussion. Throughout the evolution of UFC, we have seen some of the greatest talents in the sport of mixed martial arts in the welterweight division such as Matt Hughes, and Georges St-Pierre.
However, Usman might just surpass all the welterweight greats if he continues to dominate his opponents as he has done so far. The Nigerian-born fighter made his UFC debut on the Ultimate Fighter 21 welterweight tournament. Usman defeated Haydar Hassan to win the TUF tournament and a big-ticket to the UFC.
Usman would then go on an unbeaten winning streak defeating the likes of Demian Maia, Junior Dos Santos, Tyron Woodley, and Colby Covington. Usman dethroned the long-reigning welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley to become the champion. The UFC welterweight champion has only one loss in his record handed by Jose Caceres.
Before his debut in MMA, Usman was a force to be reckoned with in the world of wrestling. The Nigerian Nightmare started wrestling as a sophomore in his school. Usman got the nickname of “Marty” from his wrestling coach since the coach had trouble pronouncing his rather complex name “Kamarudeen”. Usman’s wrestling record is extremely impressive with 53 wins and only 3 losses.
Kamaru Usman has earned NCAA Division 2 All American honors at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Usman also made it to the finals of nationals twice during his wrestling career. Usman is also the NCAA Division 2 national champion for the year of 2010.
After making a name in the world of wrestling, Usman would decide to try his luck in the world of MMA. Usman has won the TUF 21 welterweight tournament. He also became the UFC welterweight champion after beating Tyron Woodley at UFC 239.
Kamaru Usman had a wrestling record 53-3 before he made his MMA debut. Usman is unbeaten in his UFC career with a 19-fight win streak. Usman’s MMA record is 20 wins and 1 loss.
The welterweight champion earned a staggering fight purse of $500k for his last title defense against Colby Covington. Usman also takes a chunk of the PPV buys and he is also an analyst for ESPN. The net worth of the Nigerian Nightmare is close to $5 million.
The welterweight champion has bagged some huge endorsement deals. Usman endorses a variety of brands such as Gorilla Wear, Love Hemp CBD, Trifecta, Bodyarmor, and Reebok.
