Recalling the discouraging advice he received, Zverev stated, “Some doctors said, ‘There is no way you can be a professional athlete with this kind of illness,’ …I don’t think you should set any limits to kids because that is just not fair to them.”
Undeterred by his health ailment and early discouragement by doctors, Zverev went on to become one of the top players globally, winning 19 ATP titles and an Olympic Gold medal. Zverev has also established the Alexander Zverev Foundation, which aims to encourage young people not to limit themselves due to their conditions.
Zverev’s initial reluctance to reveal his illness stemmed from various reasons, primarily not wanting it to be an excuse in his sports career and the desire to keep it private. However, he now aims to educate and inspire, especially children, about living with diabetes. Zverev’s story serves as a beacon of hope, proving that with determination and resilience, one can triumph over health ailments.
Alexander Zverev overcame on-court challenges with his insulin shots
Alexander Zverev with type 1 diabetes faced unprecedented on-court struggles due to conflicting instructions regarding his insulin injections. Initially confronted with limitations that compelled him to administer insulin off the court, Zverev utilized precious bathroom breaks to do so. However, the inconsistency in directives from tournament supervisors created challenges.
Zverev’s determination to normalize his on-court insulin routine prevailed. In 2022, he publicly disclosed his type 1 diabetes diagnosis, shedding light on the complexity of managing his health while competing at the highest level, and received a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) from the International Tennis Integrity Agency to use insulin, a prohibited substance by WADA.
Alexander Zverev: “I’ve always had doctors telling me, with an illness like diabetes you’ll never be a pro athlete in a physical sport like tennis. I want to make sure the message is out there that you really can. You should never put limits on yourself bc you have an illness” pic.twitter.com/WAJ66nG9H3

However, Zverev highlighted the impracticality of restricting his vital insulin injections to designated breaks only. During a post-match interview, he recounted, “They said it looks weird when I do this on court. But this is not a clever take because if I don’t do it, my life will be in danger. But they said it looks weird.”
Zverev continued to advocate for his right to regulate blood sugar levels during matches despite facing many scrutinies of its use. The breakthrough in 2023 at Roland Garros marked a significant victory for Zverev. After lobbying the tournament to revise its stance on banning on-court insulin injections, he now enjoys the freedom to manage his insulin intake as needed, even during a match both on the court and off it as well!
