Andy Murray is hoping to play with Roger Federer in a tournament at least one more time before the pair call time on their careers. Both Murray and Federer have had their fair share of injury troubles in recent years with the latter still recovering from knee surgery.
Murray reached the very top of men’s professional tennis and won the third of his three Grand Slam titles in 2016. He has won many accolades in the sport that make him an extraordinary player. However, he spent the subsequent two years battling a hip injury that almost ended his career. From the 2018 season onwards, Murray has been out of action consistently.
Federer isn’t expected back in time to return to Wimbledon with speculation of his retirement from the sport growing. The Swiss played in five tournaments last year before announcing after Wimbledon that he would be undergoing his fourth knee surgery since 2016.
Andy Murray hopes to face Roger Federer again before retirement
Andy Murray underwent hip resurfacing surgery at the start of 2019. The difficult journey began to rediscover the form and fitness that made him the best player in the world. The trek has been fraught with setbacks, including the coronavirus-enforced shutdown of the tennis season in 2020 and additional injuries.
Andy made a successful comeback by winning his first tournament back in the doubles at Queens Club alongside Feliciano Lopez. He did this by beating fellow three-time Major champion Stan Wawrinka.
Recently while speaking to the interviewers from the ATP official website, the Brit talked about his future in the game. Expressing his wish to play with Roger Federer before their retirement. He said, “I would love to see Roger back playing again. It’s always difficult to know when the end is. Obviously, people have been talking about it for many years. The next generation have come through, [but] the same guys are still winning the Grand Slams and I’d love to see Roger back competing again.”
He added, “I don’t know his situation, but I believe he will get back to competing. I don’t know how long for, but I really hope we can play another tournament together. It’s been a long time.”
Andy Murray last played against Roger Federer in 2015 when the Swiss came out on top in the Cincinnati Masters semi-final. The duo have faced off 25 times over the years. With Federer holding a slightly better record having won on 14 occasions to Murray’s 11.
