Carlos Alcaraz is touted as the successor after the eventual decline of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. He has played impressively this year and has beaten players like Nadal, Djokovic and Zverev. At the young age of 19, he currently holds a career-high ranking of number six.
With such a sudden rise, it is normal for Alcaraz to have a large and growing fan base. The growing fan base has led to fans calling him by different nicknames. However, Carlos has revealed the nicknames he likes for himself. As per the Spaniard, he likes it when people call him Carlitos or Charly.
Carlitos or Charly sounds kind of fun to the young tennis star. Even while referring to himself, Alcaraz prefers to call himself Charly. Judging by the way he is playing, fans will soon start calling him nicknames based on his exceptional playing style and skills.
Why Carlos Alcaraz dislikes his first name?
It is interesting to note that Alcaraz doesn’t like his first name ‘Carlos’. After the first-round match at the Madrid Open in May, Alcaraz went out of the way to express his dislike for his first name. He made it clear during the post-match interview that he doesn’t like it when people call him by his first name.
As per Essentially Sports, he said, “I don’t like being called Carlos. I like Carlitos or Charly. Honestly, Carlos seems very serious to me and it seems that I have done something wrong.” Alcaraz’s sudden rise has made him a household name among tennis fans and everyone knows him by the name of Carlos.
It would be a difficult task for him to stop people from saying his first name. However, that is probably the least of his concerns. At present, he is completely focused on winning his first grand slam. 2022 has been the year of learning and making a name on the tour.
However, 2023 would be all about lifting the first grand slam. If he manages to win a grand slam in 2023, it would be fair to say that tennis has found its successor.
