Carlos Alcaraz was born on May 5, 2003, to Carlos Alcaraz Gonzalez and Virginia Garfia Escandon in Palmar, Murcia, Spain; both of his parents came from Spanish backgrounds. His dad was one of the top 40 tennis players in Spain and played professionally in the early 1990s. His father initiated his interest in the sport by taking him to various tennis events when he was only four years old.
Carlos Alcaraz Gonzalez, commonly referred to as Carlos Alcaraz Sr., is the father of the 2022 Grand Slam Winner. Carlos Alcaraz Sr. was a former tennis player and the director at the Real Sociedad Club de Campo de Murcia. He was one of the prime individuals from Murcia to amass ATP points.
Gonzalez was instrumental in the development of his son’s tennis career. Starting at age four, he taught Alcaraz the fundamentals of the sport and then recruited Juan Carlos Ferrera, a former World No. 1, to refine his technique and get him ready for top-level competition.
Virginia Garcia married Carlos Alcaraz Gonzalez in her 20s while living in Spain. Though she wasn’t particularly passionate about sports, she was a dedicated supporter of both her husband’s and son’s athletic endeavors.
Virginia was there to witness Alcaraz’s first major win at the US Open. She has been instrumental in aiding him to mature into a talented tennis player at a young age. Few 19-year-olds possess the mental fortitude required to perform at the highest level of the sport.
From a young age, Alcaraz had looked up to Rafael Nadal, a Spanish superstar. His father decided it was best for him to have an agent, so Albert Molina began working on his behalf when he was just 12.
Three years later, Carlos joined Juan Carlos Ferrero’s Equelite JC Ferrero Sports Academy, and Ferrero, a former French Open champion and world No. 1, has been Alcaraz’s coach ever since. Alcaraz began his tennis journey at the Real Sociedad Club de Campo de Murcia at four years old.
The 19-year-old Spaniard has made history in 2022, winning five titles and the ATP 1000 Madrid Masters – an event Alcaraz attended as a child with his father. He achieved a monumental victory against Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to lift the trophy at the Manzanares Park Tennis Center, also known as the La Caja Magica in Madrid.
When did Carlos Alcaraz win his first grand slam?
At the US Open in 2022, Carlos Alcaraz emerged victorious in his first Grand Slam final. He defeated Casper Ruud, with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3. This win made him the youngest male player to win a Grand Slam title since Rafael Nadal in 2005.
Additionally, this victory propelled him to the top spot of the world rankings for the first time. “It’s something I’ve dreamed of ever since I was a kid,” the 19-year-old said.
Carlos Alcaraz has been in top form from a young age and we hope to see more of his dazzling performances on the court.
