Daniil Medvedev will be out of action for one or two months as he undergoes surgery fix a hernia problem. Giving the update through his social medias the Russian indirectly confirming his withdrawal from the 2022 French Open.
The US Open champion had breezed into the last eight at the 2022 Miami Open. Opening his campaign with a straight sets win over former world no.1, Andy Murray he defeated Pedro Martinez and Jenson Brooksby. Medvedev asset up a match to class with Polish player Hubert Hurkacz.
Poised to take back the world no.1 ranking from Novak Djokovic, Medvedev produced a lacklustre display. No.8 seed Hurkacz who took the first set after a tense tie-break [9-7].
Medvedev received a bye in the first round in Miami. He has said he wants to continue promoting his sport, but that he is not sure if he will be allowed to play on amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Recently players from Russia and Belarus cannot compete under their own flag. However, at present they can compete as individuals.
Daniil Medvedev to undergo hernia surgery
Daniil Medvedev won the U.S. Open last year and lost in the Australian Open final to Rafa Nadal in January. He will likely miss out on Monte Carlo Masters and the ATP 1000 events in Madrid and Rome in May.
Medvedev tweeted, “The last months I have been playing with a small hernia. Together with my team I have decided to have a small procedure done to fix the problem. I will likely be out for the next 1 – 2 months. And will work hard to be back on court soon. Thanks for all the support.”

The French Open will be held in Paris from May 22 to June 5, 2022. He reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros last year after losing in the first round in each of his first four appearances there. The Russian’s bid to reclaim the world number one ranking fell short on as he lost 7-6(7) 6-3 to Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the Miami Open quarter-finals.
Medvedev briefly reached world no.1 in the ATP rankings for the first time in February, before Novak Djokovic regained the top spot.
At his most recent two tournaments, Medvedev dropped his second match at Indian Wells, California, and exited the Miami Open after the quarter-finals.
