Mexico’s top tennis players have opted out of participating in the upcoming Davis Cup World Group playoff match against Taiwan due to disagreements with the Mexican Tennis Federation (FMT). Santiago Gonzalez, Alejandro Hernandez, and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela have declared they will not be a part of the Group I playoff tie scheduled for Feb 4-5 in Metepec, State Mexico.
“After a difficult deliberation, we have not reached a positive conclusion, so we have decided not to participate in the upcoming series against the Chinese Taipei team,” stated the players’ statement, published on social media on Monday.

As per the players, it appears that the FMT has not employed appropriate methods of communication, preparation, and enthusiasm, indicating that individual interests have been prioritized ahead of sports-related ones. It is disappointing that the FMT has not established fundamental measures for overseeing and organizing the country’s finest athletes.
The athletes declared that they had conveyed their reasons for abstaining from the Davis Cup competition to the federation. The declaration was co-signed by Ernesto Escobedo, Lucas Gomez, Hans Hach, Gerardo Lopez, and Manuel Sanchez. The FMT was not able to give a response right away.
