The first-round matches are officially over in the men’s draw at this year’s Australian Open. The results have gone as predicted in most of the matches. A few top-seeded players faced difficulty in their opening-round matches. However, the energy levels have not decreased since the event started. Fans have already found their favorite moment with Andrey Rublev in Melbourne.
Rublev was dressed in a white t-shirt and shorts. But he had aced the look with red sunglasses. The Russian entered the match call area and smiled while greeting Donna Vekic. A video showed Rublev playfully swinging his identity card below a person’s stomach. “Did He Hit the Old Dudes’ Balls With His ID Lol,” commented a fan after watching the video.
Rublev’s new look in Melbourne has made the fans compare him to a high school kid in the 1970s. The sunglasses added a vintage look to World No. 5. Last year’s quarterfinalist at the Australian Open, Rublev, will hope to continue his winning streak. He is currently on a five-match winning streak, which saw him start this season with a title in Hong Kong.
Andrey Rublev survives opening round horror in Melbourne
The opening round of the 2024 Australian Open produced marathon matches. One of the matches was between Rublev and Thiago Seyboth Wild. While Rublev is playing in his 25th grand slam, Wild is playing at this stage for the third time. The 23-year-old was making his debut at the Australian Open and received full support from the crowd at the Margaret Court Arena.
Rublev hit 29 winners and five aces while winning the first two sets. But Wild came back as the crowd started applauding the Brazilian’s effort. Wild took control of his service games in the third set and dominated the shorter rallies in the fourth set. His groundstrokes focused on angles rather than speed and avoided committing unforced errors.
The 26-year-old changed his strategy in the final set as he came to the net on 16 occasions. Rublev’s dominance earned him four match points in the 12th game. Willd’s serve managed to save all of them and gave him a 5-2 lead in the tiebreak. Rublev brought back his powerful forehand to win crucial points and served three aces to win the match in three hours and 42 minutes.
