After recovering from an abdominal injury, Andy Murray is ready to be come back in Wimbledon. Getting injured in the Stuttgart final against Matteo Berrettini on June 12, 2022 in his first grass final since winning Wimbledon in 2016, Murray is ready to be back on court.
The Scotsman defeated Nick Kyrgios and world no.6, Stefanos Tsitsipas on his way to the Stuttgart final. However getting injured put hindrance in his plan. Although he was still able to move, Murray was unable to serve well in the third set. He has not been consistent enough to play six games in a row in nine days. However, he did that in Stuttgart. By doing so between the final and the Surbiton semi-finals.
Andy is ready for his home grass court Grand Slam. He missed the 2022 French Open which he also skipped playing on last year. The three-time Grand Slam champion confirmed he will not play on clay. It was being done to give him the best chance of competing at the 2022 Wimbledon Open.
Former world no.1, has not played a major final since his win at the All England Club in 2016. He has also not gone past the third round of a major in nearly five years.
Murray wants to gain full fitness and play the best names in the world before retirement. After the match he said,” I had not got myself to a position where I was able to be competitive in a big match on Centre Court. But those occasions are also the ones that still drive me to continue. Because I do believe that if physically I’m in a good spot and I have prepared well there are great performances in me against the best players in those matches.”
Andy Murray on playing Nadal and Djokovic at the finals
Andy Murray last played Rafael Nadal at the 2021 Mubadala World Tennis Championship. He won 6-3 7-5 against the 20-time major champion in the semi-finals of an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi. The match was Nadal’s first since a foot injury ruled him out of the final months of the 2021 season.
Novak Djokovic has won the Wimbledon title 6 times in his career and Murray winning the tutor twice. It will be exciting to see both the players compete is it comes to that.
Andy has expressed his immense desire to play Rafa and Nole at big finals. He has good records against them. He eats to finish big against big names in tennis for retiring. After the match at Stuttgart he said, “One of the reasons why I’m still playing. To play the final of Wimbledon against Djokovic or Nadal, or Matteo Berrettini. One of those guys. That’s ultimately what I want.”
He added, “The thing that has been frustrating for me in the last few years is going into those [Wimbledon] matches – not all of them but some of them – and not being in a good place with my tennis or physically.
Murray is the crowd favourite and is looking to win his third Wimbledon title – after his previous triumphs of 2013 and 2016. However his injuries in recent years have hampered the Briton’s progress. He said, “Maybe in the last few weeks I have shown that, when physically I’m in a good place and my game is in a good place, and I have been able to prepare well – that is really, really exciting.”
The Scotsman will go into Wimbledon ranked 51st in the world. He’ll be unseeded which makes him vulnerable to an early encounter with one of the top seeds.
