SUMMARY
- Nick Kyrgios is currently enjoying his role as a commentator at the Australian Open
- However, a recently published piece has raised speculations about his retirement.
Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios is one of the most well-known players in the world at present. Kyrgios has left his mark on the courts due to his skills and has always carried himself with a chutzpah. The Australian ace is an entertaining player through and through, gifting fans many memorable moments. However, is he about to hang up his racket in the near future?
Kyrgios has been sidelined for almost over a year now. In 2023, he just played one match at the Stuttgart Open, where he lost to Wu Yibing in straight sets. Since then, Nick has had to contend with a plethora of injuries, and every time he tried to make a comeback, his return would be inevitably pushed back.
As Kyrios has not played a professional match in over a year, he has dropped out of the ATP rankings. The temperamental Aussie has not been far from the courts, though. He has taken on the role of a commentator at the Australian Open this year. Nick showed off his camaraderie with the players during his on-court interviews, too.

Kyrgios recently penned down his thoughts about his possible future in a column for Nine newspaper. He admitted that he would be okay if he did not play again. “The reality is, there is a part of me that knows my time in the sport may be over. And I’m OK with that,” he wrote (via Neos Kosmos).
Since this piece was published, it has raised a lot of questions about Nick Kyrgios’ career. Is the Australian ready to call it time on his career?
Nick Kyrgios seemingly backtracks
The Australian is one of the most talented players on the tour. He has won seven ATP titles in his career so far and even made it to the Wimbledon finals in 2022. Kyrgios faced off against Novak Djokovic and even managed to take a set off him before losing to the Serb.
Since the published piece gained traction, raising questions about his possible retirement, Kyrgios has clarified his statements. He took to Instagram Stories to clear up any misunderstandings.
“I just want to just clear it up, it’s absolute nonsense. Yes, the last year has been tough with injury, my knee, my wrist, but I’m hungry as ever, constantly rehabbing, in the gym. Part of the reason why I am commentating and doing all these things around AO is to still feel that fire and still be a part of it,” he said.
Nick Kyrgios further encouraged his fans not to stress because “there’s plenty left in the tank.” As of now, there is still an air of uncertainty about his return to the courts, but at least the retirement rumors have been put to rest.
