In a tragic turn of events, Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of the Wimbledon championship, on the eve of the tournament, citing a wrist injury. His girlfriend of 2 years, Costeen Hatzi, has expressed her disappointment, following the Australian star’s sudden withdrawal.
Kyrgios is not a stranger to injuries. For much of this year, he has had to sit out most of the major tournaments. He pulled out of the Australian Open earlier this year, in a pretty similar fashion, citing an injury to his knee that required surgery. The decision had left him “devastated.“
A growing cyst on his meniscus meant he could not return to playing competitive tennis before June, missing the French Open for this very reason. Kyrgios took to social media to inform people of his decision.
“I’m really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year,” he wrote on his Instagram. “During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during Mallorca. As a precaution, I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist. I tried everything to be able to play and I’m disappointed to say I didn’t have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon.”
Fans and well-wishers flocked to Twitter to wish him a speedy recovery.

Costeen Hatzi is ‘heartbroken’ after Nick Kyrgios withdraws from Wimbledon
Kyrgios’ girlfriend, Costeen Hatzi, has expressed her sadness at Nick’s last-minute withdrawal from the elite championship. She left a reply under a post informing everyone of his decision. She also shared a story on Instagram, expressing similar sentiments.
The Australian was seeded 30th and was set to take on David Goffin in the first round on Monday. Kyrgios and his doubles partner Thanasi Kokkinakis were set to face 3-time-major men’s doubles champion Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury in the first round.
Kyrgios, who is yet to win a title in his career, reached the final of Wimbledon last year. His hopes of winning silverware were dashed by Novak Djokovic himself, who came back strong after losing the first set to the Aussie star. It sadly remains his career-best result so far.
