Even though the 23-time grand slam champion, Serena Williams, considers her father as her true coach, her decade-long relationship with the Frenchman Patrick Mouratoglou came to a cold end in 2021. It is clear that the primary reason for him splitting up with Williams is her lack of enthusiasm and motivation for the sport.
As per Tennis Infinity, while speaking at a sports festival in the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca, Mouratogolou said, “I went to ask her what she was going to do, It wasn’t very clear to her. I asked her if she wanted to go to Roland-Garros. She told me she didn’t know.”

Finally, Patrick Mouatogolou gave an ultimatum to Serena Williams just before the WTA tour. “It was six weeks before the [WTA] Tour. I told her I was waiting for her on Monday for training and if she didn’t come I would consider myself free.”
Which she, ultimately did not. The decision from Patrick came impromptu, he decided to quit coaching Serena Williams. After that, for a long while he contemplated quitting coaching altogether. Until a former Wimbledon champion, Simona Halep approached him.
Serena Williams’ reaction to her former coach Patrick Mouratogolou coaching Simona Halep
Before Halep, Patrick left coaching for an entire year. He thought he lost the will and enthusiasm to coach further after the lengthy relationship broke up. He felt a glimmer of hope and joy when he began coaching Simona. “She is a generous woman, in the ordinary sense, but also a generous sportswoman in the effort. She is not satisfied with half measures. Courage and resilience also characterize her as a person.” Mouratoglou said of Halep as per Euro Sport.
Mouratoglou on Serena "I asked her if she wanted to go to RG. She told me she didn’t know. It was six weeks before the event. I told her I was waiting for her on Monday for training and if she didn’t come I would consider myself free.”

However, there occurred a tragic twist when Simona tested positive for doping. She got a ban from competing professionally for a couple of years and both of them have been out of business since then. Serena Williams has been excessively cold in her reaction to the incident.
She has gone as far as saying, she is not bothered by the choice she made. Sarena Williams is more focused on her long break from tennis and her family life. After her emotional goodbye in the last edition of the US Open, Serena has not said anything definite about her plans on returning to tennis.
