Stefanos Tsitsipas shows solidarity with Ukraine at the US Open
Tsitsipas pledging support at the Mexican Open is not the first time he has contributed to a cause. At the 2022 US Open, the USTA organized the “Tennis Plays for Peace” initiative involving the top players in the world. It was to raise funds for Ukraine and its citizens affected by the Russian war. Tsitsipas pledged support for Ukraine in court.
The world No. 12 was paired up with Maria Sakkari as they played against Matteo Berrettini and Katerina Zavatska. Tsitsipas, during the match, told Sakkari that he would donate $10,000 to the Global Giving Ukrainian Relief Fund if she hit an ace against Berrettini. Her first serve went wide as Tsitsipas changed the deal and said he would donate if Berrettini could not return the serve.

Sakkari went on to hit a strong second serve towards the backhand of the Italian, as he could only touch it. As the crowd cheered them on, Sakkari and Tsitsipas were seen celebrating the point together. Tsitsipas will now play his first match at Acapulco against Roman Safiullin. The crowd will again support Tsitsipas in extending his stay in Acapulco.
