Former tennis player Jan-Michael Gambill is optimistic about Serena Williams‘ chances in Wimbledon this year. The 23-time grand slam winner will play a grand slam after a gap of one year. She was off the court for a year due to her hamstring injury that she suffered in Wimbledon 2021.
As per Gambill, Serena’s game will depend on how well she hits her groundstrokes. If she is able to connect well, then she would have no trouble dominating her opponents. Moreover, he said, “When she’s hitting her groundstrokes well, that’s the Serena that goes out there and just dominates people.”

During her short doubles stint with Ons Jabeur at Eastbourne International, she showed signs of improvement with every passing game. Her serve got better and she was able to finish her volleys. As per Gambill, she only needs to perfect her groundstrokes and she can be lethal against her opponents.
Gambill thinks it’s amazing how Serena is still playing the Wimbledon at the age of 40. Most tennis players announce their retirement by now but Serena is still going strong. If she somehow manages to win the tournament, it would be more than just historic.
Jan-Michael Gambill feels serve will be an important tool for Serena Williams
Gambill noticed how Serena’s serve got better after just one match at Eastbourne International. As per him, serve will play an important role for Serena in winning matches. It will allow her to leave the baseline and come forward for some daring shots.
Other than that, he feels Serena’s presence itself will be fun for everyone interested in the tournament. From spectators to fellow players, all are excited to see Serena back on court after such a long time. While she is old and out of touch, no player would want to face her.

While the chances are slim, Serena is aiming for her 24th grand slam. She won her last grand slam in 2017 and has struggled a bit against the younger players since then. Irrespective of that, what she has managed to achieve is unprecedented in the history of tennis.
