Rafael Nadal beat Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-3 to reach the final of the ATP Mexico Open. Medvedev was unable to avenge his loss to Nadal in the Australian Open final, where the Spaniard claimed a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam singles title.
Rafael Nadal started off strong in the match with a break in the 4th game of the first set that lasted 47 minutes.
Medvedev played better in the second set but missed converting 11 break points, seven of them in a 5th game that lasted 19 minutes. However, Nadal pushed his perfect 2022 record to 14-0 to reach the finals where he will face Cameron Norrie.
Rafael Nadal Feels Lucky for Reaching the Final
Rafael is a fan favourite of winning the Mexican Open title. He has won the same title in 2005, 2013 and 2020.
In his after-match interview, Nadal said, “Every match is different, I said that yesterday, there are different conditions and everything changes.”
“It was a different game, with a very exciting second where I made very few mistakes. I played some amazing points on the break points.”
“The second set was very emotional. Daniil was playing very aggressive – drop shots, winners. It was a very difficult set. I feel lucky to win that set, because he had a lot of chances.”
Rafa was in a good mental head-space and was thankful for getting to play the game he loves.
He said, “This week means a lot after what happened in Australia, I was able to remain focused, that means that I’m OK mentally and that’s important because there’s a tough final tomorrow.”
“It’s been a long career with more success that I could have imagined. To be playing here is a gift that I treasure and appreciate, I’m thankful for these opportunities.”
Nadal is excited for the finals and also spoke highly of Cameron Norrie. He said, “His level of tennis is huge. He improved a lot at the beginning of last year, and this year he continues.”
“It’s going to be a big challenge, but we are in the final of a 500 here in Acapulco, so can’t expect an easy opponent. I’m excited about being in the final.”
