Venus Williams, a former No. 1 player in both singles and doubles, has won seven Grand Slam singles championships. Venus along with her sister, Serena has one of the most incredible doubles careers. However, she reaffirmed her decision to stop playing doubles following her sister’s retirement.
Venus and Serena teamed up for the women’s doubles match at the US Open last September. Serena wanted to participate in doubles with her elder sister Venus for her last event. Venus has repeatedly stated that she has not participated in doubles matches since then.
She was most recently questioned about the possibility of her and her close friend Reilly Opelka competing in mixed doubles at the US Open. Venus replied by saying that Reilly should be focusing on her singles career instead of doubles right now. “That’s a long way away It’d be two big serves and that’d be a lot of fun but I think Reilly should focus on the singles.” she said.
She went on to remind me that she has retired from doubles now. “And I’m actually retired from doubles. I keep saying it and no one believes me but I’ve seen the mountaintop, played with the best, played with Serena and it doesn’t get much better than that. And as much as I’d love to play with lots of people, including one of my friends Reilly, I think I’ve done it all in doubles.”
After Serena retired, there had been speculations of Venus following the same path as her sister. Venus, however, refrained from following her sister’s path and carried on with her career after the US Open in 2017. Venus is taking part in a WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal in the coming week. All thanks to a wildcard.
The last time Venus Williams danced with Serena
The Williams sisters joined hands together for one last run at the US Open 2022. The Williams sisters had not played doubles since the 2018 French Open. The match most likely signified the sisters’ illustrious doubles careers’ final match. However, they were defeated by Czech players Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova in straight sets.

With a 5-4 lead in the opening set and two set points, the Williams combo got off to a strong start. However, the Czechs rallied back. In the tiebreaker, Hradecká and Nosková were behind Williams’ but won the final four points. In the second set, they appeared to be in control, leading 4-1, but Venus and Serena managed to win three straight games to square it up. Unfortunately, the Czechs held service to lead 5-4 before breaking Serena in the last set.
It turned out to be an emotional moment for both sisters as they walked off the court hand in hand.
Together, she and her younger sister Serena have won 14 major women’s doubles championships. On the women’s professional tennis tour, the Williams sisters are credited with bringing about a new era of strength and athleticism.
