Khabib Nurmagomedov annoucned his retirement from the sport after a submission win over Justin Gaethje back at UFC 254. Nurmagomedov broke down after the fight, remembering his late father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. However, Nurmagomedov continued to be a part of the ranking and remained UFC’s pound for pound till his official retirement.
There were reports that Nurmagomedov would return again to touch the coveted mark of 30-0 to fulfill his father’s dream. However, after Abdulmanap’s departure, Nurmagommedov opined that his mother no longer wants him to compete inside the Octagon. Despite Khabib Nurmagomedov making it clear that he has no intention of fighting again, UFC President Dana White was persistent that the Dagestani fighter will return one more time.

Many argued that Nurmagomedov’s decision to retire came in the wake of his father’s death and the UFC lightweight champion was emotional when he made the announcement. However, it looks like Nurmagomedov will stick to his decision and has now officially retired, having vacated the UFC’s lightweight championship.
Khabib Nurmagomedov has officially retired with a record 29-0 having defended his lightweight title three times against the best that the division had to offer.
