The Detroit Pistons are not wasting much of their offseason and recently made the decision to remove Monty Williams from his position as head coach for the team. Although it has been less than 2 days since the 2024 NBA Finals came to a conclusion, teams across the league are looking to address their current issues in order to get better for next season.
One could claim that the Pistons are a team that should be making drastic changes given their performance last season. Since the coach is usually the person who is blamed first for the lack of success that a team has, fans can certainly understand why the Pistons decided to part ways with Monty Williams. That said, some might want to know more about their situation and why they made this decision.
Monty Williams expected to be paid more than $65 million over the next 5 years
Some fans may have felt bad for Monty Williams after hearing that he had been fired by the Detroit Pistons. After all, he had proven himself to be one of the top-tier coaches in the league when he led the Phoenix Suns to make the NBA Finals in 2021.
However, his success with the Suns did not carry over to his time coaching the Pistons. In fact, Detroit finished this season with a terrible record of 14 wins and 68 losses. Given that the Pistons had signed Moty on to one of the largest contracts that coaches are given, fans can certainly understand why the team felt disheartened and decided to part ways with him.

By terminating his position with the team, the Pistons do not need to pay him a little more than $65 million over the next 5 years. Instead, they could offer the same amount of money or even more for another suitable replacement candidate.
The Detroit Pistons lost 28 straight games under Monty Williams
The Pistons played so poorly this season that they were just one loss away from being considered the worst team in NBA history. They actually lost 28 straight games in a row to tie with the Philadelphia 76ers for the longest losing streak ever.
Given that Detroit had 17 wins and 65 losses in the 2022-2023 season, they actually got worse after hiring Monty Williams and offering him a great deal of money as opposed to even making marginal progress. Therefore, fans can certainly understand why the team made the decision to fire him. In any case, one must wonder who the Pistons will hire to fill the position of head coach before the 2024-2025 NBA season begins.
