Day 2 of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 saw some major highlights in Tennis. Some faced disappointment, some shared tears of joy. The biggest highlight of the day came in the form of Andy Murray when he shockingly announced that he will not continue his participation in the singles category.
Fan-favorite Naomi Osaka secured a win, Ashleigh Barty shocked, Gael Molfins, and Alexander Zverev in the 2nd round. Let us have a look at the major coverings for the day.

Men’s Singles and Doubles Result: Day 2: Tokyo Olympics.
After Andy Murray pulled out, his spot was taken by 190 ranked Max Purcell and the Australian rose on the occasion. He defeated world number 9, Felix Auger Aliassime. The Canadian was defeated by a score of 6-4, 7-6.
Germany’s Alexander Zverev also sealed his spot into the second round by defeating Chinese Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu 6-1, 6-3. Hubert Hurkacz, Wimbledon finalist also succeeded and progressed into the second round. He defeated Luke Saville 6-2, 6-4.
Gael Monfils faced disappointment as he was shown his way out of the Tokyo Olympics by Belarus’ Ilya Ivashka 6-4, 4-6, 5-7. Russia’s Khachanov also defeated Japan’s, Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3, 1-6, 2-6.
Japanese Kei Nishikori took home advantage and defeated 5th seed Andrey Rublev 6-3, 6-4. 3rd seed player TSITSIPAS Stefanos claimed a hard-fought victory against Germany’s KOHLSCHREIBER Philipp. It took some effort for Greece International but eventually, victory was written in his name. He defeated the German 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
In the doubles section, Daniil Medvedev faced disappointment as he was eliminated by Slovakia’s Klein/Polasek 7-5, 6-4. The Croatian duo of Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig gave their opponents absolutely no chance. This duo defeated Japan’s Daniel/Nishioka 6-2, 6-4.

Women’s Singles and Doubles Result: Day 2: Tokyo Olympics.
In the Women’s category, no. 1 seed player Ashleigh Barty crash out in the first round at the hands of Spain’s Sara Tormo Torribes. The Spaniard came out on top and defeated the Aussie 6-4, 6-3 in an epic encounter. 2nd seed Naomi Osaka came out strong against her opponent Saisai Zheng of China. The Japanese ended the match with a score of 6-1, 6-4. Though Naomi stumbled in the second set, this was not enough to take victory from her hands.

3rd seed Arena Sabalenka showed pure dominance and defeated Poland’s, Magda Linette. The match ended with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-1 in favor of the Belarus star. Ukraine’s 4th seeded Elina Svitolina saw the better off her opponent and she defeated Germany’s Laura Siegemund 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. Efforts were required but they pay off for the Ukrainian. The match lasted more than 3 hours.
Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova defeated Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-4.
In the doubles category, India’s Sania Mirza faced disappointment in the first round. The Ukrainian pair Kichenok/Kichenok defeated the Indian duo Mirza/Raina 0-6, 7-6, [10-8]. USA’S 4th seed duo Mattek-Sands/Pegula defeated Linette/Rosolska 6-1, 6-3 and seized their spot comfortably into the second round.
