Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt will return at UFC 285. He is set to fight Trevin Jones in the main event of the preliminary card. The main card of course is headlined by the heavyweight title fight between a returning Jon Jones and Ciryl Gane. One of the best female fighters, Valentina Shevchenko is also on the card, as she is defending her belt against Alexa Grasso.
Cody Garbrandt returns to bantamweight after a failed attempt to move down to flyweight. His bout against Kai Kara-France was a demolition job, as the Kiwi just dusted Cody inside a single round. Prior to that, Garbrandt had lost to Rob Font. Out of his last 6 bouts, Cody has only won 1 fight, which was against Rafael Assuncao.

Although there is no shortage of talent in Cody, his chin is his ultimate kryptonite. Ever since TJ Dillashaw knocked him out at UFC 217 and UFC 227 respectively, Garbrandt has not recovered. Although he shows signs in every fight of why he outclassed Dominick Cruz at UFC 207, Cody’s chin is not allowing him to go the full distance and get a positive result.

Garbrandt vs Jones: Fight Breakdown
While the main focus will be on Cody Garbrandt, fans can not overlook Trevin Jones. Although he is currently on a 3-fight losing streak, Jones has never been knocked out in his life. As a matter of fact, in his 9 fights, Jones has been finished twice, and both via submissions. So there is no question that Tervin will have to make it a firefight!

If he tries to be the technical fighter between the two, Cody will surely have an easier time in the contest. Although Trevin has more submissions (4) than KOs (3), it will perhaps work out the best for him to keep the bout on the feet. As per UFC stats, Cody absorbs 4.22 strikes per minute and lands 3.16 strikes at the same time.
Although the power from the 31-year-old still remains, it is his ability to withstand punches, that has caused his downfall. Every time Cody is fighting, fans are forced to be on the edge of their seats as Garbrandt may suffer a brutal KO at any point in time. Hence, relying on his average of 1.02 takedowns per fight may actually serve him the best.
Trevin Jones, on other hand, only lands 2.33 strikes per minute, while absorbing 4.96 strikes in return. So Cody has to be the favorite in this fight. So far in his UFC career, Jones has not been particularly good on the ground either. However, just like Cody’s previous opponents, Trevin will have a puncher’s chance in the fight.
