Former UFC champion Jon Jones’ heavyweight physique has sparked heated debate among the MMA fans. Ahead of the heavyweight title fight against Ciryl Gane, Jon Jones has put on a lot of weight in the last three years.
However, Jones’ physique does not look as impressive as Ciryl Gane’s. UFC fans even trolled the former champion for his dad bod. Many fans are concerned that Jones will not be able to perform at his best at his current physique.
However, the former light heavyweight champion is confident that he is at the best shape for a heavyweight title fight. During the UFC 285 media day, Jones was asked about how he is expecting to perform in a new division. Jones stated
“I feel awesome. I feel like I move really well. I have great pride in my endurance. I do a lot of endurance training. I work really hard. I feel like a stronger version of myself.”
“I am not super lean. I don’t have a mean six pack like I used to. That took me a while to get used to. I am a heavyweight now. It’s not about how you look like it’s about how you perform. And I feel like I am performing really well.”- Jones continued
Jon Jones has knockout power at heavyweight
Ciryl Gane is certainly one of the best heavyweights UFC has ever seen. However, Jones believes that Gane is not well rounded. During the media day, Jones claimed that he will outwork Ciryl Gane with his wrestling.
But, it will be foolish to overlook Jones’ knockout power at heavyweight now that he has put on a lot of muscle mass for his return. The former champion even claimed that he was hurting his training partners badly during the UFC 285 training camp.
“I have had some close knockouts this camp, knocking out other people. When I decideI want to get guys down they go down. I pretty much have 100% takedown rate in my training right now.”
It’s needless to say that, for Jon Jones the most obvious path to victory is to outwrestle Ciryl Gane. However, fans can expect Gane to show up with improved wrestling after his loss to Francis Ngannou. But, whether it will be enough to deal with Jones’ elite wrestling and grappling is something fans are eagerly waiting for to find out.
