Conor McGregor is set to return against former interim champion Dustin Poirier in a potential #1 contender’s match for the UFC lightweight championship. With Khabib Nurmagoemdov announcing his retirement this past week, there’s every reason to believe that that match-up could well be for the vacant lightweight strap. However, nothing has been made official yet.
According to a verbal agreement between Poirier and McGregor, the fight is scheduled to take place sometime in January this year.
Earlier today, former dual champion Conor McGregor took to Instagram and teased a special announcement. The Notorious has been training hard ahead of the much-anticipated rematch. He posted several clips and photos from his training camp and revealed that big news is on its way.
Conor McGregor to take on Dustin Poirier in 2021
Soon after McGregor’s announcement, speculation is rife about what it is that the Notorious is teasing. It can be argued that by the time everything is said and done, Nurmagomedov would have vacated the lightweight strap, with McGregor and Poirier set to headline a UFC PPV for the vacant belt.
However, things also seem to be pointing at an interim strap. The likes of Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje, and Michael Chandler expressing their desire to fight for the lightweight strap.
Since losing to Nurmagomedov back in 2019, Poirier made his emphatic return to the Octagon with a “Fight of the Year” performance. Poirier took on rising contender Dan Hooker and picked up an impressive unanimous decision win over the lightweight contender.
“Big news coming!” McGregor stated. The Notorious could also reveal the exact date of his scheduled bout against Dustin Poirier. While both the parties have agreed to an early bout in January 2021, nothing has been made official yet. Additionally, McGregor hinted that he wants the fight to take place inside Cowboy’s stadium. Earlier, McGregor had shared several photographs from his meeting with the owner of the stadium. There’s so much that can be speculated, however, only time will tell what it is that McGregor is teasing.
