When it comes to friends-turned-bitter rivals in the UFC, one thinks of Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington. The duo’s friendship has been documented in every media possible, in their journeys to become the next best thing in the promotion. However, both welterweights have had a fallout and have been the fan-favorite subject ever since.
Recently, Masvidal went on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. It was only a matter of time before Rogan brought up Colby Covington’s name. The 35-year-old might perhaps be Jorge’s most bitter rival to date. However, at one point the duo seemed inseparable. Right from cornering each other in their bouts to playing poker together, training wasn’t the only common ground between the two.
“He’s a b**ch. He showed his true colors for the money, for the pay-per-view. He talked about my kids, my family to maybe sell a few pay-per-views.” shared Jorge.
The 38-year-old further elaborated, “I was an established pro when he came over to American Top Team [gym]. I basically fed this dude for a f**king year. [Suddenly] he turns into something ugly. Everything I did for you, you’re trying to use that against me, especially my kids. He knows the relationship I have with my kids and you’re trying to use that against me. You’re a f**king piece of shit.”
Fans accuse Jorge Masvidal of false statements
Luckily for fight fans, the two locked horns in the main event of UFC 272 to settle their dispute. In what was expected to be a competitive battle, Colby secured a decisive victory over ‘Gamebred‘ using wrestling-heavy tactics. Covington’s offense and cardio proved to be much for Jorge to find his openings and connect leather. Masvidal suffered a lopsided beatdown at the hands of Colby.
UFC president Dana White once famously said, “this is the fight business, a lot of mean things are said about each other.” As true of a statement that is, it does lead to unfortunate events sometimes. Fans jumped the gun and took over their social media as soon as the above JRE episode aired. While some fans are in favor of the former title challenger, others seem to have a bitter taste in their mouths about his statements.
Fans believe Colby never made any direct comments about Jorge’s kids, a reason the latter used to allegedly attack Colby outside a steakhouse in Miami in March 2022. Here are some fan comments that accuse Jorge of making falsified statements —
“I’m glad Jorge proved Colby’s accusations of being a bad father wrong by attacking him on a school night”
“Colby: You are a bad father, I feel sorry for your kids. Masvidal: Stop talking about my kids.”
“Colby NEVER specifically talked about Jorge’s kids. He called him the deadbeat dad that he is. Colby broke his soul”
“Who here thinks Jorge had Colby staying with him out of the kindness of his heart? And who here thinks Jorge had Colby staying with him as some sort of business agreement to teach him to grapple better?”
“He wasn’t talking about your kids…he was talking about you being a bad father.”
“Dude really got triggered bc Colby exposed him as a bad father. Then got his ass beat lol”
Jorge will return against Gilbert Burns in the co-main event of UFC 287. Colby, on the other hand, will fight the welterweight champ Leon Edwards in his next Octagon outing.
