UFC middleweights Deron Winn and Phil Hawes will fight it out this weekend inside the Octagon. The company will hold its first non-PPV event infront of a sold-out live crowd after a long time in Texas. It will feature hometown hero Donal Cerrone in the co-main event. Whereas Calvin Kattar vs Josh Emmett will be the fight to end the night.
Phil Hawes is an alumnus of Dana White’s Contender Series. In September of 2020, Phil earned a UFC contract by knocking out Khadzhimurat Bestaev. Phil rode the moment of the big win and went on a 3 fight win streak where he earned victory over a notable fighter, Kyle Daukaus. But Hawes was handed his first loss in the company by Chris Curtis at UFC 268.

Phil Hawes vs Deron Winn: Fight Breakdown
Phil Hawes and Deron Winn both have a very decorated past in amateur wrestling. Hawes wrestled in NCAA Division I. He was also the NJCAA National Champion in 2009. Phil is gradually improving his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as well. Currently, he holds a brown belt in BJJ. He has certainly used the most of it as Phil holds 2 submission wins in his career.
But surprisingly it is his striking that does the most amount of damage. He holds 7 KO/TKO wins in his career. So is the case with his opponent, Deron Winn. Winn was two time NJCAA National Champion, once in 2008 and in 2010 for the second time. He also holds medals in competitions such as NAIA National Championships and Pan American Wrestling Championships.
But that has not translated in MMA as Winn is yet to win a fight via submission. However, he has managed to knock out 4 opponents so far in his short MMA career. Hence the fans can expect these two to keep the fight on the feet and duke it out in the middle of the Octagon.
Phil has a record of landing 4.20 significant strikes per round and absorbs 3.43 strikes in the same period. The 33-year-old also has 2 knockdowns in his UFC career. Winn on the other hand is yet to get a finish in the UFC. He lands 4.74 significant strikes per minute during his fights. But in an alarming piece of trivia Deron absorbs 5.17 strikes per minute.
But no fighter has been able to finish Deron Winn yet. Whereas Phil Hawes has already been knocked out 2 times in his career. Hence getting into a brawl will not be ideal for him. But in case that happens, Hawes also has the power to end the bout with a single shot.
It will be just a matter of who finds the chin first. Hawes will have a massive height and reach advantage. Hence, the fans can bet on him to get the job done on Saturday.
